Day 112 – Smelly Sports Bra

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Yuck all I smelled today was my smelly sports bra. This bra is an Under Armour bra – just like all the ones I use but it fell behind my washer about 3 months ago and I just got it out a few days ago. When I first dragged it out it wreaked (sp?) like a dishtowel that had been left sopping wet to dry. So I flung it in the washer.

When it came out of the washer I put it on my drying rack (I tend not to put lyrca type materials in the dryer) and then smell tested it when it was dry.

Still smelled bad so I washed it again. Did the same routine and then this morning in yoga realized I must not have smell tested it a third time before putting it in my drawer.

So I’m sitting in yoga wondering who around me smells so bad until I realize it’s myself!

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

That sucker is now in a bucket of steaming hot water, with oxi-clean (love love love oxi-clean for removing stains and what not), then itmohe washed and then dried in a dryer. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Today’s Bikram yoga pose is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana. A posture I still struggle in, especially on my right leg where my hamstring is still very tight. It’s not pretty friends but I’m getting there.

Rabbit in particular really sucked this morning. When you combine no yoga for 3 days plus early morning, I tend to have an ugly rabbit.

Oh!  I had planned on going to two classes last Friday but I woke up not feeling well and in an effort not to push my adrenals, I took it slow and didn’t go. I ended up not getting any worse which made it worth it.

Namaste.

Day 84 – Wobble, Wobble

Tree Pose or Tadasana

Tree Pose or Tadasana 5/12/10

Friday mornings I think have started to be my favorite classes.  I did ponder the fact this morning that I go in waves of what I like and dislike – for example, Maria’s crescendo thing is really driving me nuts right now, but I used to be totally annoyed by Aaron (this morning’s instructor) and he doesn’t really bother me all that much anymore.

The reason why today’s post is entitled, “Wobble, wobble” is because I was not steady today.  Wonder why some days your balance blows and other days it seems to be okay.  Strange.  Anyway, I totally wiped out during the prelims to hands to feet pose– fell back and landed on my ass and had to get up again.  It was awesome.  Awesomely embarassing!  That’s when you wish you weren’t in the front row!

Another sweet thing that happened today was after rabbit pose (or more appropriately named, smell-your-cleavage-pose), I was trying to redo my hair (it gets all jacked up because I have to move it so I can get into rabbit – I hate my hair on my neck – so it’s always in a bun) and my rubberband flew behind me and I couldn’t find it.  Then the chick behind me (who was gorgeous!) handed it to me.  After class I thanked her and told her that I couldn’t get my hair situated in Yoga (my hair hits just below my shoulders – so there’s a lot of it, but it’s thin) and always had to redo it after rabbit pose.  She said she understood and thought my rubberband was a bug flying at her.

Today’s pose is Tree Pose or Tadasana.  This one is not so stellar because of the knee problem and the fact that my hips have decided that opening up is not something they’re into at the moment.  Oh well.  If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! Namaste!

Day 73 – Quick And Dirty

Friday, May 21st, 2010
Hand to Feet Pose 5/12/10

Hand to Feet Pose 5/12/10

Of course, today was quick and dirty as usual.  Yay!  There were 5 people in class this morning.  If nicer weather is a sign of smaller class sizes, bring it on!  I love smaller classes, especially when someone isn’t so close to me that I can smell them when they start sweating.  I swear I have a better nose and better ears than most people.  Sometimes Bill (boyfriend) wonders how I can smell or hear something, and believe me, it isn’t always to my advantage as I am often annoyed at little sounds!

Today’s pose is hands to feet pose, and I would like to be better at this one at this point in time, as I used to be a lot more smashed together than I appear in the photo, but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.  When I injured my hamstring on Day 22, I really did a number on it and when I try to get in this posture deeper, I feel the love that my hamstring refuses to give.

Hands to Feet Pose 5/12/10

Hands to Feet Pose 5/12/10

I have read or heard that the idea of this pose is to get your head to touch the top of your feet.  Seems like I am miles away from that when I am in the posture – I did remember how it felt when I didn’t have a belly.  That was joyous – I would just suck in what I had of a stomach and then fall down 2 more inches!  Not giving up hope folks – there’s always hope.  Too bad my hair isn’t the top of my head – as I would be like 6 inches away from the goal. Now I am about 12 inches, I think.

Oh! I meant to mention that I am going to see a Sports Medicine doc in a few weeks to have him look at my knee that I have been bitching about.  Should be interesting – hopefully I will not be out of commission from yoga at all or for not too long.  Since today was the 60 minute class I decided to do a few of the postures that my left knee hurts in – felt good to give those muscles a stretch, but my knee did take a beating.  I still love it though and it still loves me.  We have to.

Namaste and happy weekend.

Day 63 – Back In The Saddle

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Well, for those of you who are patient followers and are still subscribed to this blog, you will be happy to know that Oliver got adopted on Saturday by a lovely family with two girls.  Oliver needed a family, as he had a lot of energy and much love to give.

So with Oliver gone, my kitties are back and I am thrilled to have them home.  I am more thrilled that Oliver found a good home and that I do not have the stress of trying to find a place for him to live.

I went to the quick 1 hour class this morning.  I was excited to have that endorphin rush that I usually experience after yoga and just the feeling of sweating your ass off.

I actually didn’t sweat all that much, but did realize that my endurance had dropped slightly – as I got weak in half moon pose – but was able to hold it the entire time anyway.

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

My muscles seemed loser, so I was able to get into postures more than I have been able to before.

Lauren was the instructor today and she found fault in some of my postures – including one of the awkward postures – and I think had I done what she told me to do that I would have fallen over and hurt my knee – that I am still trying to repair.  If you’re a Bikram yoga instructor and are reading my blog, I’d appreciate it if you could look at my feet in this awkward posture and tell me what I am doing wrong.  My instructor today told me that I wasn’t putting enough weight on my big toe.  I think I am, but it just looks like I am not because of how my legs are.  I imagine that everyone’s feet look a little different in this posture depending on how your legs are and how the arches are in your feet, for example.

Rabbit Pose 1-8-2010

Rabbit Pose 1-8-2010

Today’s pose is the Rabbit.  I hate rabbit pose.  I’ve decided I am not going to try as hard in this pose any more because I think when I try hard in this pose I end up getting a neck cramp and start to freak out because I cannot breathe through my cleavage.  I’m also mildly irritated that I cannot keep my head on my knees like I did years and years ago.

Haven’t decided if I am going to go tomorrow and try to make 5 days this week or just 4.  Lisa, tomorrow’s instructor, is always pretty intense and I feel like I need a gradual re-introduction for my knee and my stress level.

Namaste.

Day 57 – Fireass

Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Full Locust (Front View) 2/22/10

Full Locust (Front View) 2/22/10

Last night Bill and I went out to dinner with my dad.  I had an organic, free range chicken breast with butternut squash risotto and a side of broccoli.  Doesn’t sound too bad, right?  Well, then Bill and I went to get a milkshake afterward – my idea, of course.   I think the milkshake is what instigated the fireass today in class.  Fireass = diarrhea.

Full Locust Pose 2/22/10

Full Locust Pose 2/22/10

I was in the middle of doing beginning breathing and my stomach was turning and there were only like 8 people in class – I didn’t focus on people count today because I was more worried about exploding.

So I made it to the floor postures and then in the middle of Locust Pose, I thought I was in big trouble, little China.  So I left class and headed to the bathroom – sure enough, took care of business and actually made the rest of class all the more pleasant, which is exactly what I should have done in the first place!  Then I wouldn’t have had to suffer through class that long.  Ugh.

Full Locust Pose 1/8/10

Full Locust Pose 1/8/10

I debate whether or not to write these things on my blog, but I figure this is my journey through yoga, and it’s all part of the journey.  I think yoga is helping me understand what my body can handle and what it cannot.  I am wondering now if I am lactose intolerant.  Any ideas readers?

Today’s pose is the Full Locust Pose.  I am not sure if I have advanced much in this pose.  I am not sure how much advancing that you can do other than to feel stronger in it.  I don’t.  I don’t because I am always so tired from locust pose, that I’m just excited I can keep myself up.

Okay, so there is more advancement to this pose – you can check it out on Bikram’s website.

Well, I made it.  5 days this week.  4 weeks to go of trying to meet that goal.  I’m going to do it, Charlie.  Namaste.

Day 55 – Yucky

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Wind Removing Pose Right Leg 2/22/10

Wind Removing Pose Right Leg 2/22/10

I wasn’t feeling smokin’ hot this morning in class.  Gas again.  Goddamn gas.  It really has to do with what I ate – I know – SHOCKER.  I take a class on Tuesday nights, so I ended up having some pasta and breadsticks that they had to eat.  Big mistake.  Bad idea.

So my genius ass got out of order on the poses again.  I should have done the wind removing pose (pavanamuktasana) after the tree pose.  Whoops.

Wind Removing Pose 1/8/2010

Wind Removing Pose 1/8/2010

So as we go backwards, here’s me in the wind removing pose – there’s really no reason to show the left leg, as it looks pretty similar, i.e. not pretty.

Not sure on the progress on this one.  My leg that is extended should have a flexed foot – foot flexed up – not pointing out as it is.  I do feel like my knee is getting closer to my shoulder.  The back of my neck, though, is not touching the floor – but I know it can!  I have gotten that far before.

I’m tired.  It’s late.  I’ve gotta get up at 6am.  Namaste.

Day 51 – The Curse

Thursday, March 25th, 2010
Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 2/22/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 2/22/10

When I first got my period, I remember sitting on my mom’s toilet at the house I grew up in (yup, my mom had a phone in her bathroom) and calling her at my parents’ lake house (she was there for a month) and crying, telling her I got my period.  She replied something along the lines of, “Oh Jen, I’m so sorry I am not there.  You’ve got the curse.”

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

It’s funny that it’s called the curse.  I’ve bitched about my cramps before on my blog, so you guys all know about my curse and well, it was a curse today in Yoga.  Honestly, I cannot figure out what else it could have been.  But I was weak physically, sick to my stomach, etc.   I decided to stand in certain postures too to save my left knee from further damage.  Not a totally rewarding yoga experience today, folks.

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 1/8/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 1/8/10

Today’s posture is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose, which I still struggle with because of my pulled hamstring and my lack of balance.  I am bound and determined to perfect this one though, as I did have it down before.  Anyway, in the two photos above, you’ll notice that the first one shows my bad hamstring, because one of my knees is bent.  The other side is better, and I don’t have to bend either knee to get my forehead to my knee.  I will totally have to wear a darker colored shirt for my next photo shoot though, as having to endure the photos of the bologna spots every post is a bit much.

There were 5 people in class today in addition to me.  One of those 5 people was Bill…so really it felt like just 4 more people in class.  Gotta love those early morning classes that no one wants to come to!  There was one guy today that decided to wear his underwear. YES! UNDERWEAR! in class which made for an entertaining distraction.  I would think that if I were a guy I wouldn’t want my willy hanging around like that — seriously, I got interested in watching how a penis moved in the postures.  Ha.

Namaste.

Free Yoga Positions

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Free yoga positions will help your body gain the flexibility and durability of a ballet dancer and an athlete. The human body consists of a lot of joints and muscles that we use and over a period of time most of these are left unused and so turn stiff. The modern lifestyle that we have adopted is partly to blame for this. So how does one go about fixing these rigid joints and bring them back in play?

There are basic yoga poses that will help you achieve this and all you would require is a schedule that suits your individual lifestyle. Yoga is not just about one’s toe or bending your body at a particular angle. Yoga positions for beginners should be your ideal choice, until your body becomes supple and flexible enough to accommodate the difficult postures.

Yoga is the best form of exercise to tone your muscles, lubricate joints and gently massage the body. It is the most complete form of caring for your body and it ensures mental stability and health. As a beginner you must not try complex forms of the postures, as you might end up with injuries.

You can take expert guidance on what type of yoga postures that one might practice as a beginner. There are different yoga positions that can be done on different days of the week. There are a number of good websites that will help you plan your yoga exercise routine.

You can decide on the schedule that best suits your lifestyle. The simple and effective body movements of yoga go a long way in helping you live a very healthy and content life.

Day 44 – More Flexible

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
Eagle Pose With Charlie Grabbing My Foot

Eagle Pose With Charlie Grabbing My Foot

I went to the 4:30pm class today, which is always rewarding from the flexibility standpoint.  I was pretty thrilled, actually.  Ihave found that I seem to be less and less flexible in the morning, so I hope that stops.

The Russian lady taught again today, and today, for some reason, I welcomed her teaching.  She’s pretty funny when she says “let your butt blossom into the air”.  I mean, that’s just funny.  She’s also pretty darn positive and happy.  If I taught that class every day, day in and day out, I don’t think I would be happy for that long.

The sister of an old high school friend (that I don’t talk to anymore) was in class today, which was exciting.  Of course, I am not a big fan of people seeing me fat, but I miss her sister very much and the fact that she still talks to me and gets excited to see me, makes me feel good.  I need to thank her for that.

Eagle Pose

Eagle Pose on 1/8/10

Today’s pose is the Eagle pose, and as I have said before, it is one of my more difficult poses because I cannot for the life of me, get my foot wrapped around my other leg.  I wonder if this will be accomplished before year’s end.

It’s great to go to the late class to be more flexible, but I am going to get up for the early morning class to get it done for the day and to have more energy throughout the day.  Oh, forgot to tell you that I was a lazy bum and didn’t go yesterday.  It felt good not to go.  Have thrown around the idea of going twice in one day, maybe I will do that soon.  I would just have to eat superfood to have the energy for the second class, but I bet that would be beneficial and I would be WAY more flexible in the other class.  I am going to shower, folks.

Namaste.

Day 24 – Pain

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I didn’t write yesterday because I didn’t go to class yesterday.  On Wednesday night I fell down the last three stairs of my front stairs and nailed my hip on the edge of the stair – and now have a big welt from that. Of course, at the same time I twisted my knee a bit.  So yesterday I was in a lot of pain in my knee.  So I chose to stay home and take care of my knee with ice and meds.  And to be quite honest, I am not sure if I should have gone today.  I have taken acetaminophen and am icing my knee as I type!  I am not a fan of taking drugs, but I needed something to take down the inflammation.

Locust Pose

Locust Pose

Today’s pose is the Locust Pose.  I only have photos of me picking up either leg.  The full posture involves picking up both your legs from the ground.  However, when these photos were taken, I could not pick up both legs, so it didn’t seem worth it.  Now I sort of wish that I would have just had Bill take a photo,  so that the progression would be more dramatic.  However, this is what I have for now.  Basically, you put your hand and arms underneath you, so that your palms are facing down on the ground.  Ideally, your elbows should be touching, but of course, mine are not! Yet!

Locust Pose

Locust Pose

I was debating whether or not to go to class tomorrow, but think it better that I don’t.  In the beginning breathing poses, I could feel my knee aching, which wasn’t cool!  you don’t even bend your knee in that pose!  I hope everyone has a good weekend!  Namaste!
