Day 78 – Serious Soreness

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
Standing Head to Knee Pose 5/12/10

Standing Head to Knee Pose 5/12/10

Next time I think it is a good idea to go for a run for the first time in a year, I might have to think again.  Jesus Christ, I am sore.  SORE!  I hate when people talk about being sore, so I shouldn’t be doing it….but, I am SORE.

Today’s pose is Standing Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Janushirasana, now say that three times fast.  Sorry, maybe I shouldn’t make fun of that.  But I was just saying it slowly in my head and the next thought was, “say that three times fast.”

I’ve progressed in this one quite a bit since my first attempt on 1/8/10, but I am not able to hold it for very long, so I still have a lot of advancement to do and I think I will get there.

Today’s teacher was Maria and I’ve decided why her 60-minute classes don’t go as fast.  She nervously talks the whole time.  By “nervously” I mean that she gives me anxiety with her crescendos towards the end of poses.

Standing Head to Knee Pose 5/12/10

I tried to remember an example of what she did today – it was something like, “one of the benefits ofthispostureisthatitreleasestoxins.”  She just doesn’t judge her endings right and ends up having these long sentences before releasing a posture.  I do like her though.  So I am wondering how I can overcome my feelings of uneasiness with the crescendo effect.  Ideas welcome.

Tomorrow is a 90-minute class followed by lots of writing for me!  I am totally far behind!  Don’t tell the people I write for!  Namaste.

What Are Some Great Yoga Positions For Beginners

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Bikram Yoga is also referred to as Hot Yoga because it is performed for ninety minutes in a room that is heated to one hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit. There are twenty six sequential poses (exercises) that can be done by beginners as well as Yoga practitioners.

The Bikram Yoga instructor will help a beginner know his/her limitations and help them do the Bikram Yoga poses accordingly. The feeling of dizziness and nausea can accompany the routines because it is all done in heat. The suggested apparel should be layered and light so that clothing is bearable in the heated Yoga room.  Whether you’re a beginner or not, it’s wise to exercise on an empty stomach and drink a lot of water. For beginners, it is normal and is appropriate to take a rest when needed. When you are just starting out, it is perfectly normal and acceptable to sit quietly and take a rest if needed.

Beginner Yoga poses are not all easy but some of them are less complicated than others.

Here are the instructions for the Chair Pose, which is one of your awkward postures.

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Inhale; raise your arms straight out above the shoulders, fingers pointing toward the mirror or wall in front of you.
  • Exhale while bending your knees until the thighs are parallel to the floor. You can bend slightly forward to attain this position.
  • Roll your shoulders back opening your chest, keep you spine long. Hold this pose for thirty to sixty seconds.

There are Bikram Yoga poses that address certain health issues as well weight loss.

Day 70 – Knock ‘Em Dead Killer

Friday, May 14th, 2010
Standing Deep Breathing 5/12/10

Standing Deep Breathing 5/12/10

Super hat day Friday fun day!  In high school, which was 13 years ago for me, we were allowed to wear hats on Fridays.  I went to a small private school, so that was a huge priviledge for the guys…and they used to say that…and it is still ingrained in my head to say that,  so I couldn’t resist.  I cannot promise you that I won’t say it again.

This one is entitled, “Knock ‘Em Dead Killer” because seriously Friday mornings are like, “Wham, bam, thank you mam” classes.  I don’t know why they fly by for me, but they do.  I only got 5 hours of sleep last night and yawned the entire class, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

I used to be a field hockey referee for about 6 years after college.  I enjoyed it until I local school started a program and their coach taught them to play field hockey with the aggression and ready-for-battle approach of ice hockey.

Standing Deep Breathing 5/12/10

Standing Deep Breathing 5/12/10

Those players had the worst sportsmanship I have ever encountered.  They were using the field hockey field of my alma mater because their athletic director wouldn’t spend money on making a field good enough for field hockey.

I have never witnessed a more disappointing situation.  There is nothing I hate more than poor sportsmanship to make up for poor athletic ability.  A few years ago the head coach quit – and I was so excited – although, of course, I had already quit reffing because of her coaching skills and the way her players “played”.  Turns out that head coach, Fran, is in my yoga class!!  So I think that’s why class flew by this morning – my head was busy thinking about those times.

I have been trying to be more positive about people and give them the benefit of the doubt – especially because I know people look at me and think, “Jesus Christ – lay off the donuts.” – but they don’t know the real reason why I got this size.  So, I’m trying not to dislike people immediately for things I see them do or say – and I was thinking, “Fran and I have things in common – we both like field hockey, we both like yoga – and apparently enjoy sweating our asses off…” but one thing I couldn’t find the benefit of the doubt for was that sportsmanship thing.  There is just no way to justify how her players played and how she allowed them to play – even after I gave them yellow and red cards.

Well, that’s all the deep thoughts I can handle today.  Namaste.

Day 69 – Lovin’ The Afternoon Limberness!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Dead Body Pose

Dead Body Pose

With a number like 69 and bragging about my limberness – wow, if this blog wasn’t named Yoga2010 – that statement could be grossly misinterpreted.  Oh well.

There is something about afternoon classes that give me great limberness.  I like that very much.  However, the head count is something I could do without.  There were 28 people in class today – which is less than there was on Monday – but still way too many people – more people = more smells!

I tell you what, with my knee being the way it is, I feel like all I can do is beginner yoga poses – not the Bikram yoga postures that I have been working on for months.

The girl behind me and to my right had the most beautiful body – and I can only wish that mine will look like that someday.

Shangane was the instructor for today’s class.  She is originally from Russia or the former USSR – I am not sure exactly where, but somewhere in that are.  So her accent is really strong.  And at the end of class when we were in final savasana, she goes, “Don’t cheat yourself out of savasana”, but at first it sounded like, “Don’t shit yourself out of savasana” – and I thought, “Oh man, if you only know how applicable that statement is to me.”  If you’ve been reading this blog from the beginning then you know my problems with gas in yoga – knock on wood, I haven’t had that problem lately.

When I came home, Bill took photos of me – so new photos soon!  Man, getting into the Bikram yoga poses after you have cooled down and trying to get into them again in a cold room in my house – not fun.  I was really tired – so the poses aren’t as good as I can do them now – but they should show some progression.

Day 66 – Early

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Yup, made it again today!  I know you guys are SHOCKED!  I’m on a roll.  It feels sooo good to sweat again.  Still not 100% and feeling slightly sluggish.  I am super tired.  Am having a garage sale with my mom and aunts, so I have been my feet all day today and could have easily gone to bed at 8pm (and should have).

So today, Maria (instructor), turned off half of the room’s lights – the back portion (not where I stand) during the triangle.  DRIVES ME CRAZY! When I learned yoga, I learned that the lights out meant that it was time for final savansana – not timet o work my ass off and sweat my ass off.  I DO NOT like the lights off.

So we were getting into our floor postures and Maria goes, “do you guys want the lights on or off?” and I shouted out, “I prefer them ON!” – and I think she was a little taken back by it – but I really draw energy from light, especially after having my thyroid disease – light is really important for me – it can really change my mood as pathetic as that sounds.  I find that I am happier in sunnier climates.

After class I explained to Maria why I reacted the way I did and she said it was fine and I am sure that she did think it was fine because she’s so laid back – but it probably surprised her that I spoke up.  I usually do speak my mind, but yoga is known as being a silent sport, so I usually don’t talk or speak up.  Couldn’t handle the lights being off again.  She goes, “Oh, my 9am class hates when the lights are on, so I just figured they bothered you guys too.”  Well, at 9am, the sun is up higher than at 6am, so there might be enough sunlight in the room by then, but 6am – turn off the lights – and I just got out of bed 20 minutes ago!  It will make me want to go back to bed!  Why in the world though, do people hate florescent lights?  They don’t bother me unless they “buzz” – do you guys mind the lights in your yoga classes?

No photos as I am on my laptop and need to go to bed for yoga in the morning!  Then another day on my feet for the garage sale!  Made $564 today – so totally worth spending the time with my mom, my sister and my aunts!

Day 65 – Life Happens

Stretching Pose 2/22/10

Stretching Pose 2/22/10

Well, I just checked to see how many of you are actually still reading my Yoga blog which has become totally lame – and for that I am sorry.

There’s 9 of you left.  I had 22 before all this stray cat and sick business.  Oh well.  I can understand how people might think I am a total lame ass and gave up.  I assure you, though, I did not.  God bless you loyal followers – you’re either lazy about unsubscribing or are true fans.

I wanted to return to yoga on Monday, but had a horrible sinus headache and then thought that a 90 minute class on Tuesday would be too much.  So I waited for the Wednesday morning 60 minute at 6:20 am.  I think I made a good choice because today’s class kicked my ass…well, of course it did because I am still not 100% and because my lard ass hasn’t been to yoga.

Stretching Pose 2/22/10

Stretching Pose 2/22/10

And let me tell you about my lard ass – I have been craving to feel good and to be able to sweat.  I tried to over the weekend, but everytime I raised my heart rate I got dizzy and lightheaded and had to sit down!  Not cool.  Physical weakness is not something I enjoy!

Today’s pose is Stretching Pose.  In the photo directly above, you can tell that I cannot touch my toes with my forehead.  This is something I used to be able to do and hope to do again someday.  I wonder if it is a flexibility issue or a my-fat-belly-is-in-the-way problem.

Stretching Pose 1/8/10

Stretching Pose 1/8/10

Since daylight savings has begun, the morning instructors think it’s cool to turn off the overhead lights and do the class in the dark – or from the light of the windows.  NOT COOL.  Lights off to me = time to sleep!  I am okay if they turn off the lights in spine twisting pose or something like that, but PEOPLE!! not when I’m in the middle of camel

So there’s only a few more photos until I need a new set.  Get excited.  However, the advancement will not be as exciting.  Boo.  Namaste.

Day 63 – Back In The Saddle

Monday, April 26th, 2010
Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Well, for those of you who are patient followers and are still subscribed to this blog, you will be happy to know that Oliver got adopted on Saturday by a lovely family with two girls.  Oliver needed a family, as he had a lot of energy and much love to give.

So with Oliver gone, my kitties are back and I am thrilled to have them home.  I am more thrilled that Oliver found a good home and that I do not have the stress of trying to find a place for him to live.

I went to the quick 1 hour class this morning.  I was excited to have that endorphin rush that I usually experience after yoga and just the feeling of sweating your ass off.

I actually didn’t sweat all that much, but did realize that my endurance had dropped slightly – as I got weak in half moon pose – but was able to hold it the entire time anyway.

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

Rabbit Pose 2/22/10

My muscles seemed loser, so I was able to get into postures more than I have been able to before.

Lauren was the instructor today and she found fault in some of my postures – including one of the awkward postures – and I think had I done what she told me to do that I would have fallen over and hurt my knee – that I am still trying to repair.  If you’re a Bikram yoga instructor and are reading my blog, I’d appreciate it if you could look at my feet in this awkward posture and tell me what I am doing wrong.  My instructor today told me that I wasn’t putting enough weight on my big toe.  I think I am, but it just looks like I am not because of how my legs are.  I imagine that everyone’s feet look a little different in this posture depending on how your legs are and how the arches are in your feet, for example.

Rabbit Pose 1-8-2010

Rabbit Pose 1-8-2010

Today’s pose is the Rabbit.  I hate rabbit pose.  I’ve decided I am not going to try as hard in this pose any more because I think when I try hard in this pose I end up getting a neck cramp and start to freak out because I cannot breathe through my cleavage.  I’m also mildly irritated that I cannot keep my head on my knees like I did years and years ago.

Haven’t decided if I am going to go tomorrow and try to make 5 days this week or just 4.  Lisa, tomorrow’s instructor, is always pretty intense and I feel like I need a gradual re-introduction for my knee and my stress level.

Namaste.

Day 57 – Fireass

Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Full Locust (Front View) 2/22/10

Full Locust (Front View) 2/22/10

Last night Bill and I went out to dinner with my dad.  I had an organic, free range chicken breast with butternut squash risotto and a side of broccoli.  Doesn’t sound too bad, right?  Well, then Bill and I went to get a milkshake afterward – my idea, of course.   I think the milkshake is what instigated the fireass today in class.  Fireass = diarrhea.

Full Locust Pose 2/22/10

Full Locust Pose 2/22/10

I was in the middle of doing beginning breathing and my stomach was turning and there were only like 8 people in class – I didn’t focus on people count today because I was more worried about exploding.

So I made it to the floor postures and then in the middle of Locust Pose, I thought I was in big trouble, little China.  So I left class and headed to the bathroom – sure enough, took care of business and actually made the rest of class all the more pleasant, which is exactly what I should have done in the first place!  Then I wouldn’t have had to suffer through class that long.  Ugh.

Full Locust Pose 1/8/10

Full Locust Pose 1/8/10

I debate whether or not to write these things on my blog, but I figure this is my journey through yoga, and it’s all part of the journey.  I think yoga is helping me understand what my body can handle and what it cannot.  I am wondering now if I am lactose intolerant.  Any ideas readers?

Today’s pose is the Full Locust Pose.  I am not sure if I have advanced much in this pose.  I am not sure how much advancing that you can do other than to feel stronger in it.  I don’t.  I don’t because I am always so tired from locust pose, that I’m just excited I can keep myself up.

Okay, so there is more advancement to this pose – you can check it out on Bikram’s website.

Well, I made it.  5 days this week.  4 weeks to go of trying to meet that goal.  I’m going to do it, Charlie.  Namaste.

Day 55 – Yucky

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Wind Removing Pose Right Leg 2/22/10

Wind Removing Pose Right Leg 2/22/10

I wasn’t feeling smokin’ hot this morning in class.  Gas again.  Goddamn gas.  It really has to do with what I ate – I know – SHOCKER.  I take a class on Tuesday nights, so I ended up having some pasta and breadsticks that they had to eat.  Big mistake.  Bad idea.

So my genius ass got out of order on the poses again.  I should have done the wind removing pose (pavanamuktasana) after the tree pose.  Whoops.

Wind Removing Pose 1/8/2010

Wind Removing Pose 1/8/2010

So as we go backwards, here’s me in the wind removing pose – there’s really no reason to show the left leg, as it looks pretty similar, i.e. not pretty.

Not sure on the progress on this one.  My leg that is extended should have a flexed foot – foot flexed up – not pointing out as it is.  I do feel like my knee is getting closer to my shoulder.  The back of my neck, though, is not touching the floor – but I know it can!  I have gotten that far before.

I’m tired.  It’s late.  I’ve gotta get up at 6am.  Namaste.

Day 51 – The Curse

Thursday, March 25th, 2010
Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 2/22/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 2/22/10

When I first got my period, I remember sitting on my mom’s toilet at the house I grew up in (yup, my mom had a phone in her bathroom) and calling her at my parents’ lake house (she was there for a month) and crying, telling her I got my period.  She replied something along the lines of, “Oh Jen, I’m so sorry I am not there.  You’ve got the curse.”

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

It’s funny that it’s called the curse.  I’ve bitched about my cramps before on my blog, so you guys all know about my curse and well, it was a curse today in Yoga.  Honestly, I cannot figure out what else it could have been.  But I was weak physically, sick to my stomach, etc.   I decided to stand in certain postures too to save my left knee from further damage.  Not a totally rewarding yoga experience today, folks.

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 1/8/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 1/8/10

Today’s posture is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose, which I still struggle with because of my pulled hamstring and my lack of balance.  I am bound and determined to perfect this one though, as I did have it down before.  Anyway, in the two photos above, you’ll notice that the first one shows my bad hamstring, because one of my knees is bent.  The other side is better, and I don’t have to bend either knee to get my forehead to my knee.  I will totally have to wear a darker colored shirt for my next photo shoot though, as having to endure the photos of the bologna spots every post is a bit much.

There were 5 people in class today in addition to me.  One of those 5 people was Bill…so really it felt like just 4 more people in class.  Gotta love those early morning classes that no one wants to come to!  There was one guy today that decided to wear his underwear. YES! UNDERWEAR! in class which made for an entertaining distraction.  I would think that if I were a guy I wouldn’t want my willy hanging around like that — seriously, I got interested in watching how a penis moved in the postures.  Ha.

Namaste.
