Five Things To Look For To Find The Best Yoga Mat

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Whether you are a Yoga beginner or advanced, your poses will be better and less apt to be injurious if you have the best yoga mat. You want to get a good workout and not play slip and slide especially if you are doing Bikram Yoga poses in a room that is one hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit. The perspiration causes an inferior mat to become very slippery thus inviting injury. You want a mat that will be absorbent and strong yet comfortable. The following are the five things to look out for best Yoga mats.

  • The Barefoot Yoga Company has what they call the Yoga  Sticky Mats which is 1/8” thick and has stable surface that is non slip and is good for any type of Yoga. It is lightweight and durable and can be folded or rolled to accommodate many poses.
  • For twenty dollars, you can get a cheap Yoga mat in the Danskin Yoga Fitness Kit, which has in it a Yoga mat, an exercise gall, cotton Yoga strap, fitness guidebook, workout DVD, light resistance band and a blow tube.
  • If you like a thick mat that you want a Natural Fitness Powerhouse Mat. It is a great value for under $19 dollars and they plant a tree with every purchase.
  • Galam’s Prosperity Yoga Mat is great but not inexpensive, however, it is stable and has anon slip surface. The mat is good for home or studio use.
  • The Eco Yoga Mat has a non slip surface. It is a more expensive mat but measures 68”x24” which makes it a good value.

YogiToes Towel and Tapas Ultra Mat

YogiToes Towel and Tapas Ultra Mat

If you want to start doing yoga, your first investment should be in a yoga mat.  You might be curious about cheap yoga mats if you are on a budget.  Luckily, a good yoga mat will last you forever, so it’s wise to invest a little chunk of change to get one that will last a long time like the Hugger Mugger Tapas Ultra Mat (pictured) combined with Yogitoes Skidless Mat-Size Yoga Towel (pictured).

The best yoga mat will help you maintain balance and poise while doing the various postures. You will be surprised to know that our bodies are not as balanced as they seem. We tend to be strong or weak either on the right or left side of the body. A good yoga mat will help you maintain balance, coordination, safety and confidence.

Most of us have an illusion that the word cheap means things that are not of good standard but cheap need not necessarily imply bad quality. It just signifies that a product is available at a price range that would be ideal for you.

There are a number of websites where you can check the various types of yoga mats depending on your budget. The best yoga mat provides durability, comfort and is non toxic and eco friendly. The various postures of yoga are generally done barefoot and you must be careful not to slip or fall which could lead to injuries. In order to avoid such a scenario, it would be advisable to use yoga sticky mats like the Hugger Mugger Tapas Ultra Mat (pictured).

You must keep in mind the following criteria while choosing a yoga mat:

  • Can you carry it easily?
  • Are they washable?
  • Will the grip remain the same even if you sweat?
  • Are they durable?
  • Is it non toxic and eco friendly?

All you need to do to find a yoga mat is, browse the internet and you will find one that suits your needs and requirements at a price just right for you.

If you really like your yoga mat, leave a comment and let me know which brand and model it is, so I can check it out.

Tapas Ultra by Huggar Muggar Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Tapas Ultra by Hugger Mugger Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Irrespective of whether you are a beginner or a veteran, in order to do your best yoga, you’ve gotta have the best yoga mat to make your sessions of yoga successful.

If you’ve been following my blog, then you know I am a fan of the Hugger Mugger Tapas Ultra Mat combined with Yogitoes Skidless Yoga Towel.

The basic equipment that you will need to practice the Asana in a comfortable position is a yoga mat and it ensures both stability and safety. There are a number of materials that the mats are made of and these include latex, cotton, microfiber and rubber. A good mat could make all the difference in you having a great or a bad yoga session.

So what are the qualities that make a good yoga mat?

  • Support
  • Stability
  • Durability
  • Light and easy to roll
  • Non slip
  • Comfortable
  • Portability
  • Non toxic
  • Eco-friendly

The various postures of yoga require you to cushion your elbows and knees and care should be taken that you do not slip while performing them. Yoga sticky mats are ideal as they will provide you with the support and stability that you will need while doing the asana.

The mats come in various lengths and size; you can choose one depending on your individual requirement. Depending on your budget you can also buy cheap yoga mats and these are considered ideal for beginners who might not wish to invest a lot of money. You can always check the material and thickness before deciding to buy the mat. If possible you could lie down on the mat to check your comfort level.

The two popular types of yoga mats are sticky mats and travel mats and depending on your needs and preferences you can choose one that would enhance your overall performance.

Day 35 – Exhaustion

Standing Deep Breathing

Standing Deep Breathing

I cannot believe I was able to get out of bed this morning.  I wanted to get to the 6:30am class because I have a business class tonight, so the longer span I have to work on my blog writing the better (of course, I am talking about my other blogs, not just this one).

I also spent a signifcant amount of time downloading the photos from last night’s “photo shoot” and naming them so that they make sense and are easier to load onto the blog when I am writing on a a daily basis.

So it’s been from 1/8 to 2/22 on the photo shoot.  I am not sure if there has been much improvement in my body, which is sorta the reason I wanted to take photos.  Bummer.  Makes me want to avoid photo shoots in the future.

I was so tired on this photo shoot too.  I wish there was a way to have someone take photos of me during a regular class, so that I could kill two birds with one stone.  But can you imagine having a photographer in class?  How narrisitic can you appear?

I wanted to point out my Yogitoes Pink SKIDLESS towel in these photos – it is for Breast Cancer Awareness.  I really like it because when I am breathing in my boobs in the rabbit pose, I feel like I can appreciate it all the more.  On a more serious note, if you have a Yogitoes SKIDLESS towel, then any yoga mat ends up being the best yoga mat and you don’t have to worry about looking for yoga sticky mats, as this will make your mat sticky!

Anyway, I thought I’d share my photo from 1/8 of the Standing Deep Breathing, so you can compare with me.  Not Good!  Doesn’t look like I have lost weight and I am wondering if I have gained…but then again, the shirt from 1/8 is larger on me than the shirt from 2/22.

I guess we’ll see from future comparisons in other Bikram Yoga postures, how it’s going!

As far as class was concerned, it was pretty uneventful other than I felt like it was one of those classes that flew by because I was in a daze the whole time!

Day 4 – Snow Day!

Tapas Ultra Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Tapas Ultra Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Woke up at 6am today and immediately called the number for the studio because I wanted to make sure that class was still on.

The studio has a single owner and is the only location, so it is nice small business situation.  The owner had recorded a message saying class was canceled for the 6am class, so I decided to take a snow day!  It was really nice to go back to bed for a few hours.

I had a seminar to attend at 11am, so I couldn’t make the 9am class and then the seminar was canceled too…so I could have made the 9am class in hindsight, but without knowing I didn’t.

Since my body is getting a lot of exercise all of a sudden, I figured a day of rest wouldn’t be too bad!  I’ll get back at it tomorrow and then have the weekend to really recover. I always feel skinnier when I have a chance to recover from workouts.

Also, most times when I take a day of rest, I can get into more advanced yoga positions the next class, which is exciting.

I wanted to get suggestions on what you thought was the best yoga mat.  I have always been a fan of Hugger Mugger made by Tapas.  They end up being great yoga sticky mats.

Of course, I think you can use whatever mat (even ones that you can buy at Target), as long as you have a Yogitoes Towel!  Those things rock!  I have them in Yellow, Pink, White and Green.  I love them all and it is fun to switch them up depending on my mood. Seriously, though, you do not need to have a super sticky mat when you have the Yogitoes!

They also make a hand towel, if you are interested. I just use a regular hand towel:

Welcome to!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Welcome to!  Yoga2010 is my journey through yoga in 2010.  I am a 30-year old female who lives in the midwest.  I have recently been deemed in remission from Graves Disease and have decided to claim my body again.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2002 and it was a long journey to recovery.  I ended up having insatiable cravings that made me gain too much weight.  In spite of my efforts to have great will power and self-control, the cravings took over and I gained a lot of weight.

So, on November 7, 2009 when I was deemed in remission from Graves’ Disease, I started thinking about what I wanted to do to get the weight off.  I decided I would return to Yoga.

Standing Bow Pulling Pose

I started doing Yoga in 2004 when a guy that I was dating broke up with me, and I needed something to clear my mind.  Interestingly enough, my cravings weren’t as bad then.  So I wasn’t as fat as I am now.  I will post a photo of me some day soon, so stay tuned to see my fatass.

Oh, I meant to mention that I go to a Hot Yoga studio where they do the 26 Bikram Yoga poses.  This pose (that I’m doing in the photo) is the Standing Bow Pulling Pose or “Dandayamana-Dhanurasana”.  I suppose in this photo I am in between a beginner yoga pose and an advanced yoga position.  I haven’t completely achieved the complete position, but by the end of 2010, I hope to do so.  Okay, really, if I cannot achieve it by 6 months into this year, what in the hell am I doing?
So, the reason I think I will be able to get to the maximum in that position is that my goal is to go do yoga 5 times a week.  I expect you guys to hold me to that!!  I want to go to a studio 5 times a week, but I can already tell you that I am not sure if that will always happen, so I am just going with 5x a week.
Today is January 1, but I am not starting until Monday, January 4, 2010.  Not to worry, I didn’t have too much to drink last night, but I don’t want to go to the studio today because they are only having one class that is at 10am and is free!!
If there is one thing I hate about yoga studio classes, it is a full class!  UGH!  Claustrophobia!  So I decided to wait until the week.  Also, I have that mindset that you work during the week and rest on the weekends, so I only want to do yoga Monday through Friday.  My hope is that I will want to do yoga on the weekends too…but for now, it is just on the week days.
Oh, which reminds me.  I have 3 websites, this is my fourth.  Actually, all my websites are blogs, or all my blogs are websites, however you want to say it.  I work to be proper and say the right things on my other websites since they are more professional, however, this one is for me…and my journey through yoga in 2010, so I will have typos, cuss words and other fallacies.
The thing is, folks, when it comes down to it, I am a really good person.  HOWEVER, I do criticize, I do cuss and by golly, I am way too blunt sometimes.  For those reasons, you might really enjoy reading this blog.  If that’s the case, please don’t hesitate to sign up for e-mail updates (upper right hand corner).  Also, I love comments!  Leave them below for me, please!  Please do join me on my journey to become a hot yoga girl in 2010!
