There is a ton of value to yoga - I do miss it, but would prefer to do it if I had a studio in my basement. I hate having to go at scheduled times because sometimes my stomach isn't up for it at 9am, but would be at 10am, when the class isn't offered. So my hope is to do my own Bikram practice at some point, in my own home.

I am nursing a yoga injury at present. I was doing some research on the topic and happened upon your blog. Incidentally, Bikram yoga is starting to look less and less like a good idea. The physio I saw yesterday has experienced two Bikram-related injuries. She loves it, but is still a major skeptic.

It's a shame that you felt so deflated after your journey. I'm wondering if maybe, in hindsight, you see more value in the experience.

I am not, but I should be. I am sure I will down the road, but am not in a place right now where I can focus on it.

I feel for you on the menstruation. I did a Bikram class the day before I began bleeding, and it was the most painful, uncomfortabe experience! I decided to investigate into the topic. I am learning so much about my cycle. I bought a book called The Women's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle by Bobby Clennell. I also researched online about the physical and emotional aspects of our cycle. I learned so much! Western culture has done an amazing job in advancing in human and women's rights, but there are also some disadvantages. We're expected to behave, feel and act the same throughout our entire cycle, and the truth is that we don't feel the same throughout the cycle. My energy is pulled inward and downward when I bleed, causing me to seek rest and solitude. Some important things I try to incorporate into my asana practice involving my cycle include but are not limited to: allowing the blood to continue to flow, not inverting or doing postures that restrict the blood flow. Those are saved for mid cycle when i am feeling strong and energized! Being predominately kapha (in aurvedia) I have to be careful not to use my bleeding time to be lazy or lethargic, so I try to maintain exercise and asana practice at a lighter level, and practice restorative poses that I may not make time for otherwise.

I hope this helps bring some insight into why you were feeling off kilter during your bleeding time. It's normal, and it's wonderful that you are paying attention to your body! Keep up the good work.

Namaste,

Jessy
