Day 121 – F’in Headache

December 7th, 2010
half tortoise pose or Ardha-Kurmasana

half tortoise pose or Ardha-Kurmasana 8/10/10

I hate headaches. Hate them!  I also hate the cold. If I could have it my way I would live in weather that never got below 30 degrees.

I woke up yesterday morning to go to the 6am yoga class and my cramps were so bad, I decided to sleep more and go at 9am.

My cramps are really bad before my period starts and only happen about once a quarter. It’s not fun – but I’ve read that if you exercise through it all the better.

So I got up at 7:45am and headed to yoga at 8:30am.

People in the 9am class are much more talkative prior to class starting which much be because there seems to be a lot of regulars (and lots of men yesterday).

half tortoise pose or Ardha-Kurmasana 8/10/10

half tortoise pose or Ardha-Kurmasana 8/10/10

There were 23 people in class with me today but I got a spot up front so wasn’t completely aware of all the folks behind me – just the way I like it.

Today’s posture is half tortoise pose or Ardha-Kurmasana. Not much to say on that other than I think that it’ll be a miracle if I can ever do this posture with my butt touching my heals.

After class was over I didn’t have cramps – but they did come back later. I did though have a horrible, horrible headache the rest of the day and that always happens when I go to the 90 minute class. Drives me crazy. That’s why I’m skipping class today – as there’s no 60 minute available.

I’ll go tomorrow morning hopefully.

Any insight on why I get headaches for the rest of the day after 90 minute classes?

Namaste.

Day 120 – Heavy Breather

December 2nd, 2010
Fixed Firm pose or Supta-Vajrasana

Fixed Firm pose or Supta-Vajrasana 8/10/10

So I do my best to really not be annoyed when someone is breathing so loud the whole room can hear them (over the fans that are spitting out all the hot air, mind you), but I couldn’t focus on me until floor postures yesterday until I was able to get far enough away from the heavy breather. I’ve been told by my boyfriend that heavy breathers don’t know they’re breathing heavy but I have no idea how you couldn’t hear it. The annoyance factor is so bad that I get this feeling throughout my body that I want to scream and wonder if the instructor had actually touched me if I would have.

Today’s posture is Fixed Firm pose or Supta-Vajrasana pose which I’m really struggling with because my knees are so tight. It isn’t a pretty site.  Actually, I haven’t progressed much since the photo that was taken on 8/10/10.  I am frustrated because my doctor told me that my knee problem was something like “Theatre seater knee syndrome” which is just ridiculous, because they hurt in a number of areas – not only when I am sitting down.  I will just push through it though as I don’t feel like beating a dead horse.

So overall class was OK yesterday. I was highly distracted and class seemed to drag on because of my annoyance factor.

Hopefully Friday will be better.

Namaste.

Day 119 – Timeout 1, 2, 3

November 29th, 2010
Bow Pose or Dhanurasana

Bow Pose or Dhanurasana 8/10/10

Today’s class was great – there were only 4 people taking the class – including me – and everyone was synchronized.

It makes for a nicer class when everyone synchronized. I feel more balanced and tend to have more energy.

I’ve gotta make it more often to yoga as my feet have been hurting and I notice that if I don’t go for awhile and go again that they hurt and cramp. There’s just nothing that seems to make my feet work and stretch Ike yoga does.

Today’s posture is the Bow Pose or Dhanurasana Bikram Yoga pose. I suck at this posture now. Seriously suck at it. I’m so tight and fat I can barely reach my feet -awesome!

I also struggled in hero’s pose and rabbit today.

The reason why today’s post is titled, “Timeout 1, 2, 3” is because today’s teacher, Barb, likes to say, “1, 2, 3” for the time that it takes you to get out of a floor posture and get back into savasana.  I used to like it, but today it drove me crazy because it reminded me of being 8 years old and my mom putting me in time-out at the count of 3.  What are your thoughts on whether or not I should say something to her?  I sorta hate it.

Namaste.

Day 118 – Dazed and Confused

November 24th, 2010

Okay, “Dazed and Confused” might be a bit of an exaggeration because it’s a movie title so when I wanted to say, “dazed” I just added the “confused” part.

I was totally in a daze today. There were 17 people in the class and as far as I’m concerned there could have been just 2 besides me – the instructor and the guy next to me.

Full Locust Pose or Poorna-Salabhasana 8/10/10

Full Locust Pose or Poorna-Salabhasana 8/10/10

My eyes must have closed a billion times too. I got a decent amount of sleep last night so not sure where the daze was coming from. I like when that happens in class though as time flies by and the next thing I know we’re on the floor doing floor poses.

Today’s pose is the Full Locust Pose or Poorna-Salabhasana or airplane pose. I felt limited in all my poses today because I’ve taken too long of a break so I’m not as stretched out as I normally am. It did feel so good to stretch out though. I loved it. My feet especially. When I don’t do yoga my feet really suffer. They become stiff and are sore in the morning. I also have noticed that my body craves the half moon series when I’m not doing yoga as well as a back bend.

Had full intentions of going to class on Monday and Tuesday and didn’t make it. Then I watched the Biggest Loser on TV last night and so told my fatass to get up this morning.

I’m going out of town for the rest of the week so best case scenario I’ll be back at it on Monday.

Namaste.

Day 117 – Back in the Saddle

November 15th, 2010
Locust Pose or Salabhasana

Locust Pose or Salabhasana 8/10/10

Yes, for those of you loyal followers I went to yoga this morning. Crazy but  true.

After class, Barb (today’s instructor) said, “Good class.” to me and I replied, “Yes, but I can tell I haven’t been for two weeks.”. To which she replied, “we all need to take a break sometimes for a number of reasons.”

I could tell I’d taken too long of a break but I’m looking forward to my next class as I think it’ll be better because of muscle memory stuff.

Ironically, today’s pose is  Locust Pose or Salabhasana which is appropriate because this was a pose I really struggled in today. I didn’t even try to get my legs up higher because I was afraid that being out of commission for so long would injure my back and back pain is the worst of all!

Now that it’s getting colder seems like the attendance is down again – yay! When I walked in this morning there was only one other person in class and by the time class ended there were about 7 people including me – just the way I like it.

Check out this video I found on YouTube of a guy doing the Locust Pose:

Day 116 – What Is My Deal?

October 27th, 2010
Cobra Pose or Bhujangasana 8/10/10

Cobra Pose or Bhujangasana 8/10/10

I need to constantly remind myself how I feel after yoga in order to motivate my ass to get out of bed in the morning and just do it (thank you Nike ad campaign for that saying).  So it’s been awhile since I went and if you follow my blog, then you definitely know that and are probably shocked that you have another e-mail in  your inbox that I actually went to yoga.

Today’s pose is Cobra Pose or Bhujangasana.  There’s not much to say about this one.  I don’t find it terribly challenging, but I guess it is necessary as I am sure it helps somehow.

Nothing terribly exciting happened this morning.  I realized in the Standing Head to Knee pose that I had skipped out on Yoga for about 10 days because I was weak again in that posture.  Amazing how fast you can lose it.

I  have had a reader of the blog contact me about Bikram yoga positions and if there are any alternatives for people that are handicapped.  If someone knows of a website or another resource for such a thing, I would appreciate any knowledge you could provide.

Namaste.

Day 115 – Jerky, Jerky, Jerk!

October 13th, 2010
Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana - Part 2

Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana - Part 2 on 8/10/10

This morning was one of those very full 6:20 am classes. I’m not a fan.

So there wasn’t really a spot in the front of the room – guess I’ll have to get there at 6am to grab those.

So I chose the second layer back behind a guy I’ve seen in my last three classes. He comes with his grandfather or someone of that age compared to him. This guy is always in the front row so I never pay much attention because I’m usually parallel with him.

Omg (love that acronym btw), he was so jerky in his postures. Every single one. There was no flow and he always got out of postures early. In fact, I’d say he never really got in them. I think doing this every few postures is acceptable and understandable IF you’re off that day, had too much to drink the night before or aren’t feeling well. But beyond that I find it rude and inconsiderate to your fellow classmates. It interrupts the synchronicity of the room – not to mention drives me crazy!

So needless to say class wasn’t all that relaxing. And for some reason I’m really tired even though I got 7.5 hours of sleep.

Maria was gone today so Julia subbed for her I like Julie because she plays music during the class and part of that music is usually some sort of windpipe that ends up reminding me of New Mexico which is always a welcomed memory as I love it so there.

Today’s Bikram Yoga posture is the final part of the wind removal series – Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana – when I was doing it today I was thinking about how I had told you guys that my goal was to get my neck flat on the ground and how I can’t wait to tell you when I do.

I was watching a recorded version of Oprah yesterday, but I think it was the one that aired yesterday about Ali MacGraw – and when she walked on the stage, her outfit reminded me immediately of New Mexico and then of course, she mentioned that she lives in the mountains beyond Santa Fe – which just made me melt.  Man, waking up to the New Mexico sun every morning and doing yoga – there’s a treat.  Oh, yeah, that’s what she said that she does Yoga every morning and if she doesn’t then by 10am, she is reminded that she hasn’t.  I can totally relate to that.  She told Oprah that it balances her for the rest of the day.  Loved that!

Namaste.

Day 114 – Oh Holy Knees!

October 12th, 2010
Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana 8-10-10

Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana 8-10-10

I’m headed to Mayo next Monday and see my doc up there exactly one week from today. I’m a little nervous about the blood results as I haven’t felt as great as I did when I first came off the meds (felt like I was in high school again when I first came off of them) so I am wondering if anything is going on just ever so slightly. The reason I’m excited to go is for him to look at my knees to see if he can figure out what’s wrong with them. They weren’t happy in class this morning, that’s for sure.

Today’s teacher was Lisa. She seed more cynical than normal today – think she had a cold.

Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana 8-10-10

Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana 8-10-10

Today’s Bikram yoga pose is Wind Removing Pose or Pavanamuktasana and the new challenge I have for myself in this pose is that I’m trying to get the back of my neck flat on the ground. I remember when I did it in my early twenties and was in utter shock as I never thought it was possible to do and thought the teacher at the time (Angela – Bikram trained and an experienced yogi) was just talking gibberish. Of course, now I know it’s possible but that it seems impossible.

I’m playing in an Alumni Field Hockey game on Friday afternoon and am sorta dreading it. It’s funny because I thought by doing yoga all year long I’d be ready to play in it (mentally and physically), but since I haven’t accomplished what I set out to do in my physical body I find my mental one totally discouraged. If I score, I’ll forgive myself.  Dream on, little girl, dream on.

Namaste.

Day 113 – Uneventful

October 6th, 2010
Tree Pose or Tadasana 8/10/10

Tree Pose or Tadasana 8/10/10

My neighbor two doors down loves to burn Piñon – at least that’s what I think they’re doing. Could be incense. I type my posts in my backyard on my iPhone while my cats run around (I don’t let them stay outside by themselves), and I’m smelling that wonderful New Mexico smell. Sure makes me miss New Mexico.

Today’s class was uneventful. I was in between two guys so once we got to the floor, the smell was worse than normal. But beyond that there wasn’t anything in particular.

Tree Pose or Tadasana 8/10/10

Tree Pose or Tadasana 8/10/10

My knees were super tight in hero’s pose which wasn’t fun. I almost asked for a block for help. I go toMayo on the 19th for my one-year thyroid re-check. I’ll totally be asking about my knees.

Today’s pose is Tree Pose or Tadasana. I’m still working on opening my hips so I can actually do this posture. I’m much better with my left hip than I am with my right.

Hoping to have the strength to go to tomorrow’s 90 minute 6am-er.

Namaste.

Day 112 – Smelly Sports Bra

October 4th, 2010
Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Yuck all I smelled today was my smelly sports bra. This bra is an Under Armour bra – just like all the ones I use but it fell behind my washer about 3 months ago and I just got it out a few days ago. When I first dragged it out it wreaked (sp?) like a dishtowel that had been left sopping wet to dry. So I flung it in the washer.

When it came out of the washer I put it on my drying rack (I tend not to put lyrca type materials in the dryer) and then smell tested it when it was dry.

Still smelled bad so I washed it again. Did the same routine and then this morning in yoga realized I must not have smell tested it a third time before putting it in my drawer.

So I’m sitting in yoga wondering who around me smells so bad until I realize it’s myself!

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

That sucker is now in a bucket of steaming hot water, with oxi-clean (love love love oxi-clean for removing stains and what not), then itmohe washed and then dried in a dryer. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Today’s Bikram yoga pose is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana. A posture I still struggle in, especially on my right leg where my hamstring is still very tight. It’s not pretty friends but I’m getting there.

Rabbit in particular really sucked this morning. When you combine no yoga for 3 days plus early morning, I tend to have an ugly rabbit.

Oh!  I had planned on going to two classes last Friday but I woke up not feeling well and in an effort not to push my adrenals, I took it slow and didn’t go. I ended up not getting any worse which made it worth it.

Namaste.
