Day 37 – Crampy

Half Moon Pose Back Bend From 2/22

Half Moon Pose Back Bend From 2/22

Maybe I should change the title of this post to “crappy” rather than “crampy”.  It’s that time of the month again, so I have cramps, but not nearly as bad as last month.  In fact, ever since I got off birth control (the reason I got on it was for cramps) for Graves Disease, I end up having bad cramps every other period and then regular cramps the other periods.

I actually wondered if a bloated abdomen was the reason I struggled to get deeper into postures yesterday.

Today’s pose is the half moon back bend, which I seem to be advancing in.  If it weren’t for the Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class (Second Edtion) I wouldn’t be able to know how far to go in this posture to make it one of the advanced yoga positions, as the instructors don’t really talk about it and other people in the class don’t seem to go as far…but believe me you, they go further in other postures than I do!

I am getting frustrated about this weight loss thing.  It actually consumed most of my thoughts today in class, other than watching the new guy.  I am curious about watching new people (who are in the class but have never taken a class with Bikram yoga poses in it) and seeing what they instinctually do wrong.  It is curious and makes me wonder if the instruction can be improved to the point where they don’t do that.  Also makes me wonder if the consistent wrong mistakes that new folks make getting into the postures is an American thing (like how we are trained to do things in gym class) or if new yogis across the board have this problem.  Anyway, I digress.  (BTW, “I digress” is one of my favorite sayings when other people say it, but I think that is the first time I have actually used it, other than by talking to myself for practice).

So back to my frustration about the weight loss thing.  I think my ideal weight according to the doctors and what not is 165 lbs.  Hmmm.  I’m 220 lbs., well, the last time I weighed myself.  I am not sure what the point is in weighing myself again right now as visually, I could bet you that the scale hasn’t changed.  This astonishes me because when I think back to a year ago, I was eating so many sweets and only exercising 3 times a week with a personal trainer and barely breaking a sweat.

Now I am busting my balls (okay, I don’t have balls, but that is a fun saying, so I must use it) 5 days a week…and not eating as many sweets…I thought this fat shit would fall off of me.  Then I think, well, it took me 8 years to pack this shit on, so if I get rid of it in 8 months, then I get an “atta girl”.

Namaste.

Day 12 – Pigeon

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Ahhhh, I love coming home right after yoga and not going to my personal trainer and not having any other obligations during the day.  I mean, I have to work today, but no reason to leave the house, like appointments or meetings.

Lisa was the instructor today and there were only about 6 people in the class.  One was actually someone who I coached in field hockey when she was in 8th grade.  A sweet girl and apparently not too shabby at the Bikram yoga poses.  One of the frustrating things about yoga sometimes is that you have to be quiet.  I wouldn’t mind chatting it up a bit when I am a holding a posture.  It would sure help the time go by faster.

I’m on my laptop today, so I don’t have the file of my yoga posture photos, therefore, you are going to have to wait a day until I show you the next posture.

Lisa did switch it up a bit today towards the end of class.  We ended up doing the pigeon, which gives you an incredible stretch in your upper thigh.  I quite enjoyed it.

Tomorrow is another quick class.  Funny to think that I think of an hour long class as quick…but it really does fly by and when you’re holding postures twice like today rather than once like tomorrow, you sure do sweat A LOT more.  I find that my endurance isn’t as great in the 90-minute class compared to the 60-minute class.

OH!  I almost forgot, the competition thing has started at the studio.  I think it is for 6 weeks.  But basically I commit to going to that studio for however many times a week and then after 6 weeks, there is a drawing to win a free yoga mat, another yoga accessory or even free classes.  I don’t have the greatest luck in winning things like this, but I figured I would participate as it will help me keep my 2010 commitment – yoga 5 days a week.

Day 5 – At Home

Standing Deep Breathing Pose

Standing Deep Breathing Pose

In an effort to save some money and capture a few photos, I decided to do my practice at home today. The reason that staying home is saving money is because my 1-month unlimited package ran out yesterday, so I would have had to buy a new one today!

Actually, the studio I go to allows you to do a auto-pay. You can do it for 12 months or for 6 months. I am going to sign up for 12 because of this blog. So I am locked in for 12 months at $90 bucks a month.

Bill (my boyfriend) took pictures as I went through all the 26 Bikram yoga poses. I will start posting them as I go through my posts so you can see where I am and then perhaps after 26 days, then I will post them all in a row. My goal is to show how much I have progressed into the advanced yoga positions.

I cannot begin to tell you how humiliating this is for me to post these photos! I am so fat and not to mention that I wasn’t as limber because it is something like -14 degrees outside. I have a home built in 1940, and it lets in a lot of cold air, so it’s like 68 degrees or colder in my house compared to the hot yoga room that is 105 degrees! Man, that sounds nice right now.

So that’s it for this week.  Stay tuned for next week, the yoga studio is going a New Year’s challenge that I think begins on the 17th – I need to get more details, but something about if I commit to yoga 3, 4 or 5 times a week and make it that many times, then they will enter me into a drawing for a prize.  I love to be rewarded for a job well-done, so I am totally going to participate.

Day 4 – Snow Day!

Tapas Ultra Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Tapas Ultra Mat and Yogitoes Towel

Woke up at 6am today and immediately called the number for the studio because I wanted to make sure that class was still on.

The studio has a single owner and is the only location, so it is nice small business situation.  The owner had recorded a message saying class was canceled for the 6am class, so I decided to take a snow day!  It was really nice to go back to bed for a few hours.

I had a seminar to attend at 11am, so I couldn’t make the 9am class and then the seminar was canceled too…so I could have made the 9am class in hindsight, but without knowing I didn’t.

Since my body is getting a lot of exercise all of a sudden, I figured a day of rest wouldn’t be too bad!  I’ll get back at it tomorrow and then have the weekend to really recover. I always feel skinnier when I have a chance to recover from workouts.

Also, most times when I take a day of rest, I can get into more advanced yoga positions the next class, which is exciting.

I wanted to get suggestions on what you thought was the best yoga mat.  I have always been a fan of Hugger Mugger made by Tapas.  They end up being great yoga sticky mats.

Of course, I think you can use whatever mat (even ones that you can buy at Target), as long as you have a Yogitoes Towel!  Those things rock!  I have them in Yellow, Pink, White and Green.  I love them all and it is fun to switch them up depending on my mood. Seriously, though, you do not need to have a super sticky mat when you have the Yogitoes!

They also make a hand towel, if you are interested. I just use a regular hand towel:

Welcome to Yoga2010.com!

Welcome to Yoga2010.com!  Yoga2010 is my journey through yoga in 2010.  I am a 30-year old female who lives in the midwest.  I have recently been deemed in remission from Graves Disease and have decided to claim my body again.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2002 and it was a long journey to recovery.  I ended up having insatiable cravings that made me gain too much weight.  In spite of my efforts to have great will power and self-control, the cravings took over and I gained a lot of weight.

So, on November 7, 2009 when I was deemed in remission from Graves’ Disease, I started thinking about what I wanted to do to get the weight off.  I decided I would return to Yoga.

Standing Bow Pulling Pose
Dandayamana-Dhanurasana

I started doing Yoga in 2004 when a guy that I was dating broke up with me, and I needed something to clear my mind.  Interestingly enough, my cravings weren’t as bad then.  So I wasn’t as fat as I am now.  I will post a photo of me some day soon, so stay tuned to see my fatass.

Oh, I meant to mention that I go to a Hot Yoga studio where they do the 26 Bikram Yoga poses.  This pose (that I’m doing in the photo) is the Standing Bow Pulling Pose or “Dandayamana-Dhanurasana”.  I suppose in this photo I am in between a beginner yoga pose and an advanced yoga position.  I haven’t completely achieved the complete position, but by the end of 2010, I hope to do so.  Okay, really, if I cannot achieve it by 6 months into this year, what in the hell am I doing?

So, the reason I think I will be able to get to the maximum in that position is that my goal is to go do yoga 5 times a week.  I expect you guys to hold me to that!!  I want to go to a studio 5 times a week, but I can already tell you that I am not sure if that will always happen, so I am just going with 5x a week.

Today is January 1, but I am not starting until Monday, January 4, 2010.  Not to worry, I didn’t have too much to drink last night, but I don’t want to go to the studio today because they are only having one class that is at 10am and is free!!

If there is one thing I hate about yoga studio classes, it is a full class!  UGH!  Claustrophobia!  So I decided to wait until the week.  Also, I have that mindset that you work during the week and rest on the weekends, so I only want to do yoga Monday through Friday.  My hope is that I will want to do yoga on the weekends too…but for now, it is just on the week days.

Oh, which reminds me.  I have 3 websites, this is my fourth.  Actually, all my websites are blogs, or all my blogs are websites, however you want to say it.  I work to be proper and say the right things on my other websites since they are more professional, however, this one is for me…and my journey through yoga in 2010, so I will have typos, cuss words and other fallacies.

The thing is, folks, when it comes down to it, I am a really good person.  HOWEVER, I do criticize, I do cuss and by golly, I am way too blunt sometimes.  For those reasons, you might really enjoy reading this blog.  If that’s the case, please don’t hesitate to sign up for e-mail updates (upper right hand corner).  Also, I love comments!  Leave them below for me, please!  Please do join me on my journey to become a hot yoga girl in 2010!
