Things To Know About The Origin of Bikram Yoga

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

The origin of Yoga Bikram style was extracted from traditional Yoga routines. It was developed by Bikram Choudhury and became popular in the early 1970s. Bikram Yoga consists of twenty six poses and two breathing exercises and takes ninety minutes to complete.

Bikram Yoga poses work to better health and wellness and the reason for the heated room is to generate deeper stretching, preventing injury, along with tension and stress relief. Bikram Yoga postures purport to stimulate and restore health to muscles, joints and organs of the body.

Bikram Choudhury is a Hatha Yoga Master who founded Bikram Yoga some thirty years ago. He studied Yoga when he was four years old in Calcutta, where he was born. When he was thirteen years old he won the National India Yoga Contest and remained undefeated for three years. He went on to become a marathon runner and a champion weight lifter. It was during a weight lifting accident when he was twenty years old when he sustained a knee injury. The doctors told him he would never walk again. He went back to India and with six months of Yoga therapy, he was totally recovered and that is how Bikram Yoga originated; through his own healing regimen.

Choudhury was able to prove the healing benefits of his Bikram Yoga system, and the findings were posted in 1972, at the International Medical Conference in Kyoto, Japan.
