I honestly considered skipping today. I’m not sure I can say that I’m glad I went. My stomach has been bothering me this week and I first thought it was cramps but now I think there’s something upsetting my stomach.

There were 6 people in class this morning. And about 10 minutes – 10 minutes!!! – into class another person came in. This individual has been in other classes with me and it was a Tuesday class.

Lisa teaches Tuesdays and she doesn’t tolerate it when people aren’t paying attention and getting in and out of postures about the same time. And rightfully so because the synchronicity helps me for sure.

Well today’s instructor was Aaron and Aaron does the Bikram yoga poses with you so he isn’t aware of the things people are doing around the room.

The late girl apparently thinks that she can do any postures and any moves she wants. It was so distracting until she finally just laid down until the final breathing. Totally bizarre.

Today’s posture is Rabbit pose or Sasangasana. Rabbit isn’t my friend these days. I definitely feel the stretch but I find myself freaking out in this posture again. I freak out because all I can do is breathe in my boobs.

Day 122 – Lucked Out

There are some days when you just luck out by who you set your mat down next to and yesterday was one of those days because I set my mat down next to a lady that was not only good at yoga but focused and balanced which brought me a greater strength in class. I wanted to thank her after class but thought it’d be weird so I didn’t.

Today’s posture is Camel Pose or Ustrasana. My 4 week break in the last 8 weeks has definitely not helped me in camel. Toxins that had escaped my liver during regular practice have returned and consequently I’m enjoying the “I’m about the vomit” feeling that beginners to Bikram yoga poses tend to experience.

Other than that class went well and I’m definitely sore from being gone – it’s sorta nice to be sore though. Reminds me that I’ve got work to do.

I’ll be going tomorrow as well and hopefully I’ll actually post on the day I went.

I went to class tonight from 8:30-9:30pm.  This morning was a 90-minute class and I just get too fearful that I am going to get a headache.  Actually, the owner of the studio, who I have been e-mailing with today (I used to exchange yoga for working there – so I know her on a different level) asked me how my breathing was and said that my headache could be due to breathing!  WHAT?!  That seems sooo crazy.  Anyone know.  I mean, I understand, maybe how I could get a headache from holding my breath – but I DON’T DO THAT – it’s more like catching my breath sometimes. 

So I went for a 2.2 mile run about 45 minutes before class started, because the class is called, “Gentle Hatha” – so I’m thinking it’ll be a lot of good Yoga stretching – perfect for after a run.  It did have some great stretching towards the end, but Maria (who also teaches tomorrow morning’s 6:20am – which I will be attending) didn’t keep this class gentle, well, in my terms of gentle.  We must have stood in warrior pose for 10 minutes (on each leg!) – my thigh cramped a billion times and I felt like I was walking with two cinder blocks on my legs!

I did like it though -it was challenging.  I liked the offering of different postures to stretch and work things that I don’t work with Bikram yoga poses.

There was only Maria, another lady and me in the class – which is probably the reason that Mary, studio owner, is going to stop the class at the end of August.  I will try and make it the rest of August though as if tonight was any indication, I need the help, that’s for sure.

One thing I didn’t like is that we ended up not always facing the mirror – so in some of the inversion postures, I ended up looking at my ass and vag – not my idea of good times.  Not to mention that it seems like all the effort I am making with these classes and running seems null and void when it comes to slimming my frame.  FATTY!

I’ve gotta get in the shower and get to bed – my next yoga class is in 8 hours!

What Are Some Great Yoga Positions For Beginners

Bikram Yoga is also referred to as Hot Yoga because it is performed for ninety minutes in a room that is heated to one hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit. There are twenty six sequential poses (exercises) that can be done by beginners as well as Yoga practitioners.

The Bikram Yoga instructor will help a beginner know his/her limitations and help them do the Bikram Yoga poses accordingly. The feeling of dizziness and nausea can accompany the routines because it is all done in heat. The suggested apparel should be layered and light so that clothing is bearable in the heated Yoga room.  Whether you’re a beginner or not, it’s wise to exercise on an empty stomach and drink a lot of water. For beginners, it is normal and is appropriate to take a rest when needed. When you are just starting out, it is perfectly normal and acceptable to sit quietly and take a rest if needed.

Beginner Yoga poses are not all easy but some of them are less complicated than others.

Here are the instructions for the Chair Pose, which is one of your awkward postures.

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Inhale; raise your arms straight out above the shoulders, fingers pointing toward the mirror or wall in front of you.
  • Exhale while bending your knees until the thighs are parallel to the floor. You can bend slightly forward to attain this position.
  • Roll your shoulders back opening your chest, keep you spine long. Hold this pose for thirty to sixty seconds.

There are Bikram Yoga poses that address certain health issues as well weight loss.

I really don’t know what it is about Fridays, but the class sure flies by.  I was thinking about that on Wednesday and wondering why the Wednesday class is the same length, but seems to last a lot longer.

Maybe it’s the excitement of the weekend, the way that Aaron teaches the Friday class compared to how Maria teaches the Wednesday class.  I checked today and Aaron moves at the same pace – there’s a clock in the room, so it’s easy to keep track of.

But, more to the title of this post and that is that my knee has been killing me and I think I have pushed it again.  I am supposed to be getting into a sports medicine doctor – as my doctor referred me to a guy that does partial and total knee replacements and when I talked to his nurse on the phone, she said it sounded like I had a torn ligament and was not in need of a knee replacement.  Thank god.

Anyway, I haven’t kept on top of the coordination of my knee checking event and therefore haven’t heard anything and of course, I don’t know when an appointment is planned, so I will phone those folks when I am done writing this.

Today’s Bikram yoga pose is the third set of the awkward postures.  This one always makes me think that I look like I am going to pee in my pants.

Ironically, “O Holy Knee!” applies for this posture because I cannot advance in it without feeling extreme shooting pain in my knee, so don’t hold your breathe on improvement in this posture for awhile.  Have a good Memorial Day Weekend!

Day 68 – Limber In The Afternoon

What is it about afternoon classes?  I am so much more limber!  Sure gives me hope!  In the morning sometimes I think that I haven’t gotten anywhere but today I really enjoyed being in my body.  It felt good and it felt limber.

I went to the 4:30 afternoon class with Bill.  It was PACKED.  Thank goodness I got my favorite spot – the front right corner.  Otherwise I would have felt really claustrophobic today.

The woman next to me today reminded me of the smell of cat’s breathe.  I determined after too many whifs (breathing through your nose in yoga when someone smells next to  you – is not fun!) that she must have not bathed for awhile or her clothes had not been washed.  Whatever the case, it was disgusting and I need to make a plea to all yoga people.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wash yourself and your clothing, your towels, etc. between yoga sessions.  There is no reason, especially in a HOT YOGA class to subject your innocent bystander of a neighbor to your odors.

Today’s pose is Spine Twisting Pose – yet another pose that I used to be a lot better at before this belly.  Don’t know why I cannot grab my foot with my hand in this pose like I used to be able to do.  I’ll keep trying! 

Bill and I have a photo session planned for after class on Wednesday.  I am not going to yoga tomorrow because I need to focus on work as I have a huge deadline this week.  I’ll be back on Wednesday.  Namaste.

I stayed up too late last night and will probably be doing the same tonight, however, I have to go to the 6:30am class tomorrow because I have other obligations during the day.  Today, however, I did not.  So I went to the 4:30pm class with Bill, which, of course means I will be sore and tired in the morning for not spreading out the classes more.

Since it was the 4:30pm class it was packed more than normal.  Bill and I had the good fortune of snagging two spots in the front row.

As I suspected, I was more flexible due to the fact that the class happened later on in the day (I am usually more flexible in the afternoon).

Today’s pose in the the Bikram yoga poses series is the Cobra Pose.  There’s not too much to Cobra and I welcomed it today because I was exhausted from doing the Bikram Triangle Pose and Standing Bow Pulling Pose.

From the look of the photos (the one at the top is from 2/22/10) I have advanced in this pose.  I am not surprised since this takes a lot of lower back strength and I do feel as though my lower back has gotten stronger and more flexible.  Thank you, yoga.

So I just looked at my calendar for April and looks like I should be in town all month, which only means that I need to stick to my guns about making class 5 times a week.  That is my goal for April.  Crazy to think that the first quarter of 2010 is nearly over.  Namaste.

Day 45 – More Space

So  I’ve decided that I cannot go to the 4:30pm one afternoon and then the 6:30am class the next day because I am so weak!  I had to get out of a number of postures early today because I was too tired to stay in them.  I hated it. So I think I need to be better to space them out.

When class started only 5 people were in class, including me, however, but there were three people that came in later.  So the entire class ended up consisteing of 8 people, which is ironic because there were 18 people in class yesterday.  I do like when there aren’t many people in the class.  It really is nice.

I am sorry that I have been late in posting and what not, I have been working on my websites, writing for business blogs and trying to wrap up my taxes.  I told myself last year that I would have my taxes done by February.  I obviously didn’t get that done. I do meet with my tax man tomorrow, so hopefully he will not need anything else and they will be done!!

I am listening to barred owls hoot back and forth right now, which is very exciting.  I have lived in my house for 5 years and every year, except for last year, they have made a nest in my front Silver Maple and had babies.  About mid-April the owlettes start exploring and end up testing their flight skills.  When they do that, they end up in my window wells.  I hope they do that this year, it is a lot of fun and they are so precious.  If and when I move from this house, I will miss that the most.

I don’t know what my deal is but I cannot seem wake up in the morning.  You’d think about 2 months of waking up at 6am that it would be a natural thing my body does.  Not the case.

Today’s class went well.  The instructor was sexy-voice Steve again.  He is a good instructor, and is dedicated to his practice, which I find admirable. 

Today’s posture is the 3rd part of the Awkward poses.  I always think this posture looks like you have to go to the bathroom really bad.  What do you think?

I should look like I am sitting in a chair, not a stool, but my knee will not allow for me to go further.  Well, I guess I could go further but being in a lot of pain doesn’t sound terribly exciting.

No one commented about the more informative posts over the weekend, so I am curious if that means that you hated them or just were indifferent.  Namaste.
