Day 119 – Timeout 1, 2, 3

Bow Pose or Dhanurasana

Bow Pose or Dhanurasana 8/10/10

Today’s class was great – there were only 4 people taking the class – including me – and everyone was synchronized.

It makes for a nicer class when everyone synchronized. I feel more balanced and tend to have more energy.

I’ve gotta make it more often to yoga as my feet have been hurting and I notice that if I don’t go for awhile and go again that they hurt and cramp. There’s just nothing that seems to make my feet work and stretch Ike yoga does.

Today’s posture is the Bow Pose or Dhanurasana Bikram Yoga pose. I suck at this posture now. Seriously suck at it. I’m so tight and fat I can barely reach my feet -awesome!

I also struggled in hero’s pose and rabbit today.

The reason why today’s post is titled, “Timeout 1, 2, 3” is because today’s teacher, Barb, likes to say, “1, 2, 3” for the time that it takes you to get out of a floor posture and get back into savasana.  I used to like it, but today it drove me crazy because it reminded me of being 8 years old and my mom putting me in time-out at the count of 3.  What are your thoughts on whether or not I should say something to her?  I sorta hate it.

Namaste.

Day 90 – $%*&ing Headache

Bow Pose or Dhanurasana

Bow Pose or Dhanurasana

Today was a 90 minute class and I always get worried about those because for some reason – it doesn’t matter what I ate or drank the night before or even if I had a few beers or not, I always get a headache in the 90 minute classes which then stays with me all day long.  LOVELY.

So I was in Rabbit pose when I got my headache – and it usually creeps in right about then.  I have a major writing deadline on the 15th – so to have a headache is not a fun thing to deal with.

Today’s pose is Bow Pose or Dhanurasana.  This one is still hurting me because of my knee.  I have decided to push my knees a little bit more as I am sick of them hurting and not being able to get in the postures – now that I know it is just a bruise type of a situation and I haven’t pulled anything, then I don’t see why I shouldn’t push it a bit.  Especially because if I take an anti-inflamatory, my stomach hurts so bad that I am rolling around on the ground.  So I guess it is time to let Mother Nature take it’s course and get my knees right!  The photo below makes me want to break out in song, “I like big butts and I cannot lie…”

Maria was today’s instructor and she said something that sorta stuck with me through class but that I have been thinking about the rest of the day.  We were in camel pose and she mentioned how camel is difficult for a lot of folks because it makes our chests be exposed and totally open.  And when our chests are exposed and totally open, we might be vulnerable to our emotions that we have kept in check.  And if you think about it, when you are sad or crying, you are usually hunched over – not with a big open chest, ready to face the world.  It was something interesting to ponder and I wonder if how you hold yourself physically on a daily basis had any merit to how you wear your emotions.

Day 58 – Tight

Bow Pose

Bow Pose - Dhanurasana 2/22/10

The weekend is not my friend.  I always struggle in Monday morning classes – more so because of my tightness than anything else.  I have debated whether or not to attend classes on the weekend, but I think I need the break too.  What I would love to have is a hot yoga room in my house.  I have always wanted that – with mirrors, etc.  I wonder how much that would cost.  I certainly wouldn’t do it in the house I am in now, as it is much too small, but some day I think it would be great to have it.  It would be like a sauna with mirrors.

Bow Pose - Dhanurasana 2/22/10

Today’s pose is the Bow Pose or Dhanurasana.  Ever since my trip to Arkansas this one has hurt my left knee, so I am not able to get into as much as I would like.  Well, I could get deeper into it, but I need to let my knee repair a bit before going any further in it. It’s no wonder why there is a little kid doing this pose in Bikram’s Yoga book – as it does take a bit of flexibility to get into this one.

So something I have been meaning to cover in these posts is the amount of calories that you burn in hot yoga class – afterall, this is supposed to be a loss weight yoga thing for me.  I remember in January when I asked one of the instructors if they thought hot yoga was a cardio workout – they seemed annoyed by the question and said that it reminded them of “how many calories do you burn in yoga?”  She did say that she thinks it is around 600.  But, as we all know, it depends on a lot of factors, namely weight and amount of time burning the calories. My friend Google to the rescue.  Check out this awesome Australian site where you can enter your weight and the amount of time the class was.  Calories Burn Calculator.  Just did mine.  It says I burned 1025 calories in class today, holy cow.  I am not sure how accurate that is.  That means in a 90-minute class, I burn 1538.  Whoa nelly.

Class was pretty packed this morning.  I was surprised.  It was a nice Spring morning, so I figured there wouldn’t be as many folks in class.  Perhaps there were a few feeling bad about a few too many deviled eggs on Easter?  Or maybe too many Peeps.

Namaste.

Day 26 – Gas-ey

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I really have no idea how to spell, “Gas-ey”, but eating Chili last night for dinner wasn’t the wisest choice I have made in a long time.  Thank god there were no loud explosions.  Actually, I don’t think that has ever happened to me in Yoga class and the only one I can really remember is one time at a restaurant in Albuquerque – it was like a bomb.  Bad news bears.

Bow Pose

Bow Pose

Today’s pose is Bow Pose or Dhanurasana.  I am not an expert at this pose.  Believe me you.  My knees and thighs should be off the ground and shoudl be closer together.  Today’s instructor, Lisa, decided that she would help me in this pose.  That entails her lifting up by holding onto my wrists.  Well, I wasn’t too confident about staying in the pose and consequently lost the grip of my left foot and kicked her right in the boob.  NIOOOCE!  Ways to feel like a jackass, first step.

Until tomorrow.  Namaste.
