Day 106 – The Jury’s Still Out…

Garurasana or Eagle Pose 8/10/10

Garurasana or Eagle Pose 8/10/10

I’ve decided that “The Jury’s Still Out” when it comes to Shagane.  She taught a pretty amazing class today.  In fact, when I walked out of the class, some middle aged man behind me goes, “Thank you so much for that class, that was the best yoga class I have ever taken.”  Instead of saying, “Thank you.” Shagane went into why he didn’t listen to her and got out of postures early and then I just said thank you and left.

I understand not saying, “Thank you” could be a cultural thing – or it could just be something that hasn’t been taught or learned – heck, I still have to remind my parents to accept a compliment and say thank you for it rather than negating it.

Nonetheless, the point was that it was a wonderful class and she totally deserved the compliment.

I arrived at the studio about 4:10 – class starts at 4:30pm and ended up falling asleep before class.  That always freaks me out because I don’t know if I mumbled anything or what.

Today’s posture is Garurasana or Eagle Pose.  Not one of my more rockin’ poses.  Oh Eagle, why cannot I wrap my foot around my calf?  Why must you hold me back?  I thought by the end of this year that I would have knocked this out.  I am not sure it’s one of the fat probems either (in other words, I cannot do it because I am fat) because I have seen people who are larger than me get ‘er done.  Maybe there’s still hope for it.  We’ll see.

I am going to do my best to drag myself out of bed in the morning for 6:30am yoga.  Wish me luck.

Namaste.

Day 77 – Cinder Blocks

Eagle Pose - Garurasana

Eagle Pose - Garurasana

Yesterday I got up at 6am, excited to make it to my first Monday class in some time and guess what – got there and the parking lot was totally empty.  I was not a happy camper.  Truth be told, my soul is a night one and doesn’t appreciate the early morning wake-ups, but is willing to do it to have a more limber and flexible body.

So I drove home and got back in bed and then hoped on the studio’s website to see if they were closed for Memorial Day.  Sorta pissed me off when I found out that they were only offering one class on Memorial Day at 10am (you know I’m not attending a class that is the only class of the day!  TOO MANY PEOPLE!) – which wasn’t on their website, but on their Facebook page.  I have no idea why the instructors last week couldn’t have passed that very useful information onto me!  Guess I should have known to check Facebook before going to the studio!

While I am assume there were signs posted, I have no idea why the studio owner wouldn’t have asked the instructors to announce it in their classes.  So maybe she did, and I don’t want to contact her and say anything in case she did exactly that and then the instructors get in trouble for not saying anything.  Oh well.

Today’s instructor was Lisa and there were only 3 other people in the class besides me!  You know I was in heaven!  Actually, one person came in late, so I thought that it was only going to be 2 people and me, but I was wrong…that’s fine though, still the small class that I adore.   It’s funny though because on the way to the studio this morning, I was thinking, “I wonder if there will be a lot of people missing today or if it will be super crowded.”  I was pleased when I pulled in at 6:25 for my 6:30 class and saw only 5 cars in the parking lot!

The reason for today’s title is because I decided it was a good idea last night to go for a run.  Haven’t done that in over a year, even though my knee is reaping the benefits of my stupid idea today, it did feel good.  My thighs haven’t had that sort of workout in awhile, so they feel like someone had me step into cinder blocks and walk about with them latched onto my thighs today.

Today’s pose is Eagle Pose or Garurasana.  Still trying to nail this one down with wrapping one foot behind the other calf.  All a matter of time, but I am limited in how far I can “sit down” in this posture because of my lovely left knee.

Namaste.

Day 44 – More Flexible

Eagle Pose With Charlie Grabbing My Foot

Eagle Pose With Charlie Grabbing My Foot

I went to the 4:30pm class today, which is always rewarding from the flexibility standpoint.  I was pretty thrilled, actually.  Ihave found that I seem to be less and less flexible in the morning, so I hope that stops.

The Russian lady taught again today, and today, for some reason, I welcomed her teaching.  She’s pretty funny when she says “let your butt blossom into the air”.  I mean, that’s just funny.  She’s also pretty darn positive and happy.  If I taught that class every day, day in and day out, I don’t think I would be happy for that long.

The sister of an old high school friend (that I don’t talk to anymore) was in class today, which was exciting.  Of course, I am not a big fan of people seeing me fat, but I miss her sister very much and the fact that she still talks to me and gets excited to see me, makes me feel good.  I need to thank her for that.

Eagle Pose

Eagle Pose on 1/8/10

Today’s pose is the Eagle pose, and as I have said before, it is one of my more difficult poses because I cannot for the life of me, get my foot wrapped around my other leg.  I wonder if this will be accomplished before year’s end.

It’s great to go to the late class to be more flexible, but I am going to get up for the early morning class to get it done for the day and to have more energy throughout the day.  Oh, forgot to tell you that I was a lazy bum and didn’t go yesterday.  It felt good not to go.  Have thrown around the idea of going twice in one day, maybe I will do that soon.  I would just have to eat superfood to have the energy for the second class, but I bet that would be beneficial and I would be WAY more flexible in the other class.  I am going to shower, folks.

Namaste.

Day 13 – Smelly

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

A friend of mine has always had smelly shoes.  She doesn’t like to wear socks with her shoes, especially her running shoes, so they really smell horrible.  But it is one of those horrible smells that you get accustomed to and sort of like because you like the person so much.

Yoga Charlie

Yoga Charlie

Sorta reminds me of my like/dislike for cat’s breath.  If you’ve ever smelled it you know why I have a dislike, but I sort of like it too.  And ever since I was told by my vet that if you know your cat’s breath smell, then you will be able to tell when they have renal failure (because their breath changes smell), I have become more interested in my cat’s breath.  Charlie is one of my cats in the photo.  When Bill and I had our photo session, Charlie wanted to participate, so I snapped this one of him really quickly.

So back to the smelly thing.  So today while in one of the standing basic yoga poses, I got this smell, very similar to the smell of my friend’s shoes.  At first it made me smile, thinking of my friend, but then after smelling it breath after breath, I was disgusted.  So I must have thought about it the rest of my standing poses.  I came to the conclusion that the older gentleman behind me must wear his pants and not wash them and as soon as they become saturated in his sweat again, they evaporate, releasing that stench into the air.

Eagle Pose

Eagle Pose

Then it made me think about how you would go about “demanding” that someone wash their pants.  I am not sure there is a way, but I really REALLY think it is RUDE to go into a room that is 108 degrees with at least 15 people and expect them to smell your sweat rehydrated!  So any suggestions you guys have about how I could tackle that issue, I’d appreciate it.  I do know the owner of the studio and would be happy to approach the instructor, I just wouldn’t want them thinking I was some sort of crazy freak.  I would imagine how I felt today is much like a pregnant woman feels when she smells a smell that she finds nauseating.

TODAY’S PHOTO!  I know you’re excited to get two photos today because there was a big fat ZERO yesterday.  This is Eagle Pose.  Eagle pose has never been my friend.  I have never been able to wrap my foot around my standing leg no matter how skinny I am!!  I work at it too.  So you’d better believe that I want that foot to wrap around my standing leg come the end of 2010!  You will notice that my fingers are not lined up.  This is another problem that I have, but have no doubt they will be lined up soon – that is something that doesn’t take me too long.

A friend of mine who is reading this blog, suggested that I do a tour around the country to different yoga studios.  That would be fun!  So I think the best way to get started on that is to collect suggestions of your favorite studio or studios you like.  Of course, I don’t have the money to do that either, so I’ll have to figure that one out as well.  I’ve got 11 months to go, so where there is a will, there is a way!
