Hands to Feet Pose or Pada-Hastasana 8/10/10

Hands to Feet Pose or Pada-Hastasana 8/10/10

Yup, that’s right – this is the post from last Friday morning’s class.  Right on top of things, as you can tell.  I really love writing but with my new business, I do a lot of it, so when it comes time to write this blog sometimes it is put on hold for some time and for those of you who enjoy reading my posts, I apologize for that.

I barely remember class from Friday and that’s probably how it should be.  It was Aaron’s class, so no doubt it flew by and I had a nice time.

So let’s just skip to the posture for this post.  That would be Hands to Feet Pose or Pada-Hastasana.  Look at that wide ass.  Jesus.  Gotta love it.

In fact, I go to the Mayo Clinic on October 19th for my re-check on my thyroid.  It’s almost been a year since I was deemed in remission.  I felt FANTASTIC for the first few months, but am at the point where I am not feeling so hot, so I am anxious to get my blood taken and see if I am hypothyroid at all.  I may be slightly, but not completely.  I think I’m not completely because I remember how exhausted I felt when I was completely hypothyroid.  Of course, now I don’t have the medication to play around with.

So I’ve done the math.  If you read the “About” section of this website/blog thingy, then you’ll notice that I committed to writing 5x a week.  Ha!  That has NOT happened.  And watch how I committed to writing, not necessary yogaing.  But I meant that I wanted to yoga.  So that would have been 260 days of Yoga.  Um, I am not going to make that.  Today is day 103 (haven’t written the post yet) and there’s only a little more than 90 days left in the year.   In hindsight, I hope this year is preparing me for 5 times a week next year – not writing, but going to Yoga.

Day 73 – Quick And Dirty

Hand to Feet Pose 5/12/10

Hand to Feet Pose 5/12/10

Of course, today was quick and dirty as usual.  Yay!  There were 5 people in class this morning.  If nicer weather is a sign of smaller class sizes, bring it on!  I love smaller classes, especially when someone isn’t so close to me that I can smell them when they start sweating.  I swear I have a better nose and better ears than most people.  Sometimes Bill (boyfriend) wonders how I can smell or hear something, and believe me, it isn’t always to my advantage as I am often annoyed at little sounds!

Today’s pose is hands to feet pose, and I would like to be better at this one at this point in time, as I used to be a lot more smashed together than I appear in the photo, but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.  When I injured my hamstring on Day 22, I really did a number on it and when I try to get in this posture deeper, I feel the love that my hamstring refuses to give.

I have read or heard that the idea of this pose is to get your head to touch the top of your feet.  Seems like I am miles away from that when I am in the posture – I did remember how it felt when I didn’t have a belly.  That was joyous – I would just suck in what I had of a stomach and then fall down 2 more inches!  Not giving up hope folks – there’s always hope.  Too bad my hair isn’t the top of my head – as I would be like 6 inches away from the goal. Now I am about 12 inches, I think.

Oh! I meant to mention that I am going to see a Sports Medicine doc in a few weeks to have him look at my knee that I have been bitching about.  Should be interesting – hopefully I will not be out of commission from yoga at all or for not too long.  Since today was the 60 minute class I decided to do a few of the postures that my left knee hurts in – felt good to give those muscles a stretch, but my knee did take a beating.  I still love it though and it still loves me.  We have to.

Namaste and happy weekend.

Day 39 – Tight

Hands to Feet Pose 2/22/10

Hands to Feet Pose 2/22/10

So I was in the middle of class this morning and realized that  I shouldn’t post late on Saturday nights because I said that the Standing Separate Leg Stretching Pose was the final pose in Bikram yoga postures’ half moon series.  Wow.  That was inaccurate.  So I then threw around ideas of how I would correct that in the blog.  And I finally decided I would just continue on, offering the final posture in the half moon series today instead and maybe I will skip Standing Separate Leg Stretching Pose when it comes up.

So today’s pose is hands to feet pose.  Unfortunately, I haven’t advanced much in this pose either due to the “Pop, pop, pop” episode as well.  I also find it difficult to get my forehead touching my knees or shins in this posture, as the instructor often tells us to do.  Well, actually, I have only heard that out of a male instructor and I think the reason for that is that he doesn’t have boobs.  There just isn’t a way to get your forehead to your knees or shins when you have boobs, unless you don’t want to advance in the posture.

Today in class we were doing the final breathing and in between the first and second set, Steve mentioned something about avoiding “wind stitches”.  I was perplexed and wondered if I heard him right.  But, I caught him after class, and sure enough, it is “wind stitches” – so how many of you know what those are?  He sort of explained them, but it was more visual, so I’m not able to repeat it here, so Google to the rescue.  OMG.  Google doesn’t have anything!  WOW.  Well, anyway, it was similar to little cramps that run horizontally across your tummy.  Not sure if that makes sense.

Day 8 – Crowded

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Seemed to be a lot more people in class this morning, which, as you know, I don’t care for.  But I still got a spot up close (I like to be close to the mirror because I am near sided and I cannot see myself clearly from far away with sweat dripping into my face) and being in the back reminds me of a paperweight my dad has, “If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes.” So, quite frankly, I don’t want to be looking at other folks’ asses.  Well, and in Yoga, you get a lot more than people’s asses.

Today’s photo is the Hands to Feet Pose.  As my boyfriend, Bill, said, “This one’s good because you are folded in half.”  However, I still find fault in it because I know where I can actually get to.  I USED TO touch my forehead to my toes!!  There’s a good foot to go now.  So, friends, stay tuned to see better photos of me in this pose.

As the lbs. fall off of me, I should be able to go deeper in this pose.  My belly is a big prohibiter of allowing me to go even further.
Back to class, today I finally wondered what “Namaste” meant.  I mean I have heard it over and over again and I know to say it back to the instructor, but what does it mean?  So I looked it up.  Wikipedia says that it is a common greeting or saying in Southern Asia.   Well, that’s nice, but why in the hell do you say it at the end of Yoga?  There are several explanations of this…the most valid one is that “namasate” means “I salute the God within you.”  Hmmm.
You can see the additional examples and ideas on Wikipedia.  Ta ta for now!
