Day 88 – So Much For A Good Start

Locust Pose or Salabhasana

Locust Pose or Salabhasana 5/12/10

Well, today marks 6 months into this thing and I wouldn’t say I am doing that great of a job.  Damnit.

The teacher this morning was not Maria – which means Maria was probably on vacation – at least I hope that’s the case.

It was another girl and I don’t know her name.  Her voice was a little on the squeaky mouse side of things, but I eventually got used to it and by the end of class I liked it.

Of course, I liked it too because she walked around the class and corrected people’s postures that they were doing incorrectly and I really like that as sometimes it pains me to see people doing the postures wrong.

I am by no means a posture expert, but really, some folks do the half moon series, for example, totally wrong and I wonder if they have lower back pain the next day.

Today’s pose is Locust Pose or Salabhasana.  I am doing better with this one, although these photos seem to be no reflection of the advancements that I have made in this pose – maybe one of these days I will be able to show the advancement I have made.  Of course, my pant legs that are hanging down don’t really show how far off the ground my knees are either!

I’m headed to the lake – so Happy Fourth to everyone!

Namaste.

Day 74 – Long But Good

Awkward Postures 5/12/10

Awkward Postures 5/12/10

I had too much to drink on Sunday night, so I didn’t get up and go to class on Monday morning and then I thought that I would go to afternoon class, but this is the last week before the end of the month and I’ve got to turn in a spreasheet to get paid.

We are again having a  garage sale (don’t ask why…), so I am trying to finish all my writing by Thursday evening so that I can go over and enjoy the sale with my mom and my aunt.  I know most people don’t enjoy garage sales, but I do when people are there because I love to people watch (as you might have noticed while reading this blog).

Today’s posture is the first part of the awkward pose.  It is interesting because the front on view doesn’t look too bad, but the profile view – which is usually better in most cases makes me look really large and in charge.

Lisa taught today’s class and as usual, I appreciated the help she gave me in a couple of postures, namely, the locust pose.  She made me look a lot better in it!  I got my legs up to 90 degrees of my head.

There was a guy from India in the class today and he kicks ass at all the postures.  If you have ever had a glance through Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class, then you know how advanced some of those folks are in there.  I would venture to guess that he is even more advanced.  It is nice to have him in the class because I can get a feeling of where I need to be headed in a few of the postures.  I haven’t seen him in class for over a year though, so I am not sure if I will see him again for awhile.

There were about 20 people in class this morning.  I could have done with less…but still not as bad as afternoon classes.  Namaste.

Day 57 – Fireass

Last night Bill and I went out to dinner with my dad.  I had an organic, free range chicken breast with butternut squash risotto and a side of broccoli.  Doesn’t sound too bad, right?  Well, then Bill and I went to get a milkshake afterward – my idea, of course.   I think the milkshake is what instigated the fireass today in class.  Fireass = diarrhea.

I was in the middle of doing beginning breathing and my stomach was turning and there were only like 8 people in class – I didn’t focus on people count today because I was more worried about exploding.

So I made it to the floor postures and then in the middle of Locust Pose, I thought I was in big trouble, little China.  So I left class and headed to the bathroom – sure enough, took care of business and actually made the rest of class all the more pleasant, which is exactly what I should have done in the first place!  Then I wouldn’t have had to suffer through class that long.  Ugh.

I debate whether or not to write these things on my blog, but I figure this is my journey through yoga, and it’s all part of the journey.  I think yoga is helping me understand what my body can handle and what it cannot.  I am wondering now if I am lactose intolerant.  Any ideas readers?

Today’s pose is the Full Locust Pose.  I am not sure if I have advanced much in this pose.  I am not sure how much advancing that you can do other than to feel stronger in it.  I don’t.  I don’t because I am always so tired from locust pose, that I’m just excited I can keep myself up.

Okay, so there is more advancement to this pose – you can check it out on Bikram’s website.

Well, I made it.  5 days this week.  4 weeks to go of trying to meet that goal.  I’m going to do it, Charlie.  Namaste.

Day 54 – Not As Bad As I Thought…

Locust Pose

Locust Pose 2/22/10

So I wasn’t as sore and inflexible as I thought I’d be after going to the 4:30pm class last night and waking up for the 6:30am one this morning.

To be quite honest, all I can remember about this morning’s class is how I want to order some Sanuk shoes.  I saw them on the shelving where everyone puts their stuff before class and picked them up and said, “Wow, these are cute.”  And my instructor turned around, and said, “Thanks, I got them on Amazon.com.”  Of course, she has a size 6 shoe, so anything will look cute on her, whereas I have a size 10 shoe, so NOT SO HOT.  My credit card billing cycle renews on the 8th of every month, so guess what is on my list to buy?  I haven’t bought shoes for 2 years, so I think it’s time to reward myself with some shoes.  What do you think?  Do you like them?  Tell me if there is a certain style you prefer.  My instructor said they are designed and made with a fabric that is supposed to be allow you to sweat and not have the shoe smell (as they are meant to be worn without socks).

Today’s pose is the locust pose.  Oh, the locust pose.  Also known as the arm breaking pose.  It doesn’t feel like I am breaking my arms any more in this pose, which is good, but I am still not where I want to be.  There was a lady in the class today, Pamela, I think her name is.  Anyway, she can almost get her legs over her head, with her toes touching her head (here’s an idea of what the locust pose should look like as one of the advanced yoga poses).  So in other words, you lay on your arms (palms down and elbows as close together as you can get them) and lift your thighs.  Unfortunately because of my pants, it doesn’t look like my thighs are off the ground, but they are.  Friends, I am going to look like the link above by the end of 2010.  It’s time to really master one of the advanced yoga poses.  It’s one I want to master.  Master of disaster.

Locust Pose 1/8/10

This is certainly one of the poses that I have gotten a little further in and one I mess around with a lot – but adjusting my arms or my legs to see what works best for me.  I remember a few years ago when I was really into yoga, I was close to mastering this one and remember falling out of it because I was in total awe that I was close.  Just my advancement from Jan. 8 to Feb. 22 gives me hope that I can get where I want to be with this one come December 31st.  Tomorrow is a short class – only 60 minutes.  Two 90 minute classes in a row is nice, but I am ready for a WHAM! BAM! THANK YOU MAM! 60 minute class.

Namaste.

Day 24 – Pain

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I didn’t write yesterday because I didn’t go to class yesterday.  On Wednesday night I fell down the last three stairs of my front stairs and nailed my hip on the edge of the stair – and now have a big welt from that. Of course, at the same time I twisted my knee a bit.  So yesterday I was in a lot of pain in my knee.  So I chose to stay home and take care of my knee with ice and meds.  And to be quite honest, I am not sure if I should have gone today.  I have taken acetaminophen and am icing my knee as I type!  I am not a fan of taking drugs, but I needed something to take down the inflammation.

Locust Pose

Locust Pose

Today’s pose is the Locust Pose.  I only have photos of me picking up either leg.  The full posture involves picking up both your legs from the ground.  However, when these photos were taken, I could not pick up both legs, so it didn’t seem worth it.  Now I sort of wish that I would have just had Bill take a photo,  so that the progression would be more dramatic.  However, this is what I have for now.  Basically, you put your hand and arms underneath you, so that your palms are facing down on the ground.  Ideally, your elbows should be touching, but of course, mine are not! Yet!

I was debating whether or not to go to class tomorrow, but think it better that I don’t.  In the beginning breathing poses, I could feel my knee aching, which wasn’t cool!  you don’t even bend your knee in that pose!  I hope everyone has a good weekend!  Namaste!
