Day 108 – Old Drinking Buddy

Standing Bow Pulling Pose or Dandayamana-Dhanurasana 8/10/10

Standing Bow Pulling Pose or Dandayamana-Dhanurasana 8/10/10

I was stretching before class this morning, now that the 6:20s and 6:30s are getting popular in the morning (a trend I hope that doesn’t continue) I try to get there earlier, so I had an unusual 5 minutes to spare this morning, so I was stretching and looked up and saw an old drinking buddy from high school.  It made my day.

I actually just saw him on the Plaza the week before having lunch with his fiancee – who I didn’t much care for and he acted weird towards me.  But today he was just as he always was – and was not with her, which makes me think that she is the source of the weirdness he had towards me.  What a shame when you are marrying someone and they end up changing you.  I’ve seen it happened to a couple of high school buddies.

Usually seeing someone from high school makes me self-conscious and feel inferior – this is something I do to myself because of my current physical appearance – as I think I look like a chubster – especially since high school days – but with him, I wasn’t bothered.  Maybe because I have always thought of him as a happy and non-judgemental person.

I was sore and tired in class today and didn’t perform to the best of my abilities.  My right hamstring is exceptionally tight, so much so that I find that I cannot touch my forehead to the floor in Standing Separate Leg Stretching Pose as I did on Monday and Tuesday!  Ridiculous!

Today’s pose is Standing Bow Pulling Pose or Dandayamana-Dhanurasana.  I am getting better at this one, but I am far behind on my right side compared to my left side.  I don’t know what it is about my right side, but I cannot seem to maintain balance and get my hips leveled.  BOO!

Namaste.

Day 79 – Quick and Simple Friday

Standing Bow Pulling Pose

Standing Bow Pulling Pose

It’s actually Sunday when I am writing this…I simply didn’t get to the post on Friday for various reasons.  I am getting busier with my blog writing business, so I find myself not being able to write about the fun things I enjoy as much.  Hopefully as I get more folks trained and get less writing off my shoulders, I can be more diligent about writing.

Today’s pose is Standing Bow Pulling Pose or Dandayamana-Dhanurasana. I feel like I am getting worse at this pose.  My knees limit me and my flexibility in my hips blows, so that also limits me.  I want to get better at it, but I find myself working on my endurance more than being able to get into the posture more.  And what I mean about focusing on the endurance is that I try to stay in the pose for the minute that is required.  That’s pretty tough for me still.  You’d want to think that wasn’t the case, but it is!!

Also, I remember when Bill was taking these photos, I was so tired from class, that I could not hold this postition for very long.

I don’t know if I have shared this before or not, but in the heart of my thyroid disease and in my early 20s I went to two Bikram yoga classes in a row.  I went to a 9am and it ended at 10:30am and then I stayed for the 11am.  It was wild, but I tell you, I was super flexible for that 11am class and it felt wonderful.  I think I ate a PowerBar in between or something.  Wonder if I could pull that off again.  The only problem is that they do not offer that 11am anymore…so there are no back to back classes anymore – other than the ones in the afternoons, which as you all know, are way to crowded for me!  Namaste.

Day 53 – Late Start

Cobra Pose from The Front

Cobra Pose from The Front

I stayed up too late last night and will probably be doing the same tonight, however, I have to go to the 6:30am class tomorrow because I have other obligations during the day.  Today, however, I did not.  So I went to the 4:30pm class with Bill, which, of course means I will be sore and tired in the morning for not spreading out the classes more.

Since it was the 4:30pm class it was packed more than normal.  Bill and I had the good fortune of snagging two spots in the front row.

As I suspected, I was more flexible due to the fact that the class happened later on in the day (I am usually more flexible in the afternoon).

Cobra Pose

Cobra Pose

Today’s pose in the the Bikram yoga poses series is the Cobra Pose.  There’s not too much to Cobra and I welcomed it today because I was exhausted from doing the Bikram Triangle Pose and Standing Bow Pulling Pose.

From the look of the photos (the one at the top is from 2/22/10) I have advanced in this pose.  I am not surprised since this takes a lot of lower back strength and I do feel as though my lower back has gotten stronger and more flexible.  Thank you, yoga.

So I just looked at my calendar for April and looks like I should be in town all month, which only means that I need to stick to my guns about making class 5 times a week.  That is my goal for April.  Crazy to think that the first quarter of 2010 is nearly over.  Namaste.

Day 47 – Goddamn Gas

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Standing Bow Pulling Pose

Standing Bow Pulling Pose

So I have started a probiotic today in hopes that it will help my digestive system that likes to act up in the morning.  I really do suffer from the gas.  It is miserable trying to hold it in, in a physical sense and also sorta miserable to have the anxiety of letting one rip on the middle of class.

Bill is a teacher and is on Spring Break for the next few weeks, so he joined me for Yoga this morning at 6:20am.

Today’s pose is Standing Bow Pulling Pose.  A new challenge I have in this pose is keeping my hip alligned, so that one hip doesn’t pop up.  You can see that I didn’t get that accomplished in this photo from 2/22/10.  It will be something I work on for months.  My left side will happen more quickly than my right side.  I think if I went to more 90 minute classes (because there are two rounds of everything) that it would happen more quickly than going to the 60 minutes.  But I do like the 60 minutes, as they tend to fly by.

There are only three days of Yoga this week because Bill and I are headed to Arkansas for a few days, so I will be MIA from March 18-22.  I plan on going to Yoga on the 17th, but no promises that I will have time to post about it, as we are driving and the sooner we get outta here, the sooner we can relax in Arkansas.

Class was pretty full this morning and we had Lauren as an instructor.  She usually teaches the 9am classes, so there must not have been any instructors available.  It was refreshing though because all the 6:20 MWF instructors never actually walk around class and look at everyone’s postures.  They do class with you, which is fun too…but there are folks who only attend the 6:20 MWF, and therefore never get corrected in their postures.  So there was a lot of learning by everyone today.  She didn’t correct me in any of my postures, but she most certainly could have.  I am by no means perfect in my postures.

I have discovered that my Rabbit is getting really bad in the morning and also when it’s the 6:20am classes because we only do 1 set of most of the postures.

Namaste.

Welcome to Yoga2010.com!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Welcome to Yoga2010.com!  Yoga2010 is my journey through yoga in 2010.  I am a 30-year old female who lives in the midwest.  I have recently been deemed in remission from Graves Disease and have decided to claim my body again.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2002 and it was a long journey to recovery.  I ended up having insatiable cravings that made me gain too much weight.  In spite of my efforts to have great will power and self-control, the cravings took over and I gained a lot of weight.

So, on November 7, 2009 when I was deemed in remission from Graves’ Disease, I started thinking about what I wanted to do to get the weight off.  I decided I would return to Yoga.

Standing Bow Pulling Pose
Dandayamana-Dhanurasana

I started doing Yoga in 2004 when a guy that I was dating broke up with me, and I needed something to clear my mind.  Interestingly enough, my cravings weren’t as bad then.  So I wasn’t as fat as I am now.  I will post a photo of me some day soon, so stay tuned to see my fatass.

Oh, I meant to mention that I go to a Hot Yoga studio where they do the 26 Bikram Yoga poses.  This pose (that I’m doing in the photo) is the Standing Bow Pulling Pose or “Dandayamana-Dhanurasana”.  I suppose in this photo I am in between a beginner yoga pose and an advanced yoga position.  I haven’t completely achieved the complete position, but by the end of 2010, I hope to do so.  Okay, really, if I cannot achieve it by 6 months into this year, what in the hell am I doing?

So, the reason I think I will be able to get to the maximum in that position is that my goal is to go do yoga 5 times a week.  I expect you guys to hold me to that!!  I want to go to a studio 5 times a week, but I can already tell you that I am not sure if that will always happen, so I am just going with 5x a week.

Today is January 1, but I am not starting until Monday, January 4, 2010.  Not to worry, I didn’t have too much to drink last night, but I don’t want to go to the studio today because they are only having one class that is at 10am and is free!!

If there is one thing I hate about yoga studio classes, it is a full class!  UGH!  Claustrophobia!  So I decided to wait until the week.  Also, I have that mindset that you work during the week and rest on the weekends, so I only want to do yoga Monday through Friday.  My hope is that I will want to do yoga on the weekends too…but for now, it is just on the week days.

Oh, which reminds me.  I have 3 websites, this is my fourth.  Actually, all my websites are blogs, or all my blogs are websites, however you want to say it.  I work to be proper and say the right things on my other websites since they are more professional, however, this one is for me…and my journey through yoga in 2010, so I will have typos, cuss words and other fallacies.

The thing is, folks, when it comes down to it, I am a really good person.  HOWEVER, I do criticize, I do cuss and by golly, I am way too blunt sometimes.  For those reasons, you might really enjoy reading this blog.  If that’s the case, please don’t hesitate to sign up for e-mail updates (upper right hand corner).  Also, I love comments!  Leave them below for me, please!  Please do join me on my journey to become a hot yoga girl in 2010!
