Day 112 – Smelly Sports Bra

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana 8/10/10

Yuck all I smelled today was my smelly sports bra. This bra is an Under Armour bra – just like all the ones I use but it fell behind my washer about 3 months ago and I just got it out a few days ago. When I first dragged it out it wreaked (sp?) like a dishtowel that had been left sopping wet to dry. So I flung it in the washer.

When it came out of the washer I put it on my drying rack (I tend not to put lyrca type materials in the dryer) and then smell tested it when it was dry.

Still smelled bad so I washed it again. Did the same routine and then this morning in yoga realized I must not have smell tested it a third time before putting it in my drawer.

So I’m sitting in yoga wondering who around me smells so bad until I realize it’s myself!

That sucker is now in a bucket of steaming hot water, with oxi-clean (love love love oxi-clean for removing stains and what not), then itmohe washed and then dried in a dryer. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Today’s Bikram yoga pose is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose or Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana. A posture I still struggle in, especially on my right leg where my hamstring is still very tight. It’s not pretty friends but I’m getting there.

Rabbit in particular really sucked this morning. When you combine no yoga for 3 days plus early morning, I tend to have an ugly rabbit.

Oh!  I had planned on going to two classes last Friday but I woke up not feeling well and in an effort not to push my adrenals, I took it slow and didn’t go. I ended up not getting any worse which made it worth it.

Namaste.

Day 83 – Energy Needed

Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana or Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana or Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

I pulled into the parking lot this morning with 5 minutes to spare and there were too many cars for my liking.  I think this daylight savings thing is getting people up sooner.  Bummer!  I love the small morning classes (although I am sure the studio owner isn’t keen on them), so in some ways I am ready for the fall so that there won’t be as many people in class.  But I am enjoying the summer and it is nice to finish yoga and walk outside without having to put a jacket on.  I am not a big fan of being soaking wet and then putting on a jacket.  Gross.

Today’s pose is Dandayamana-Bibhaktapada-Janushirasana or Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose.  This one is still rough on the hamstring for some reason and I can tell I haven’t been to a 90 minute class for awhile because I was tired by the time this one came around.   Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose is one of those poses where you can try your damnest, or  you can take it easy and catch your breath.  That’s what I did today in this pose.  Shoot me.

I’ve been checking out my e-mail subscriptions for this blog and noticed that it changes dramatically, so I am curious to know if there are poeple that subscribe and unsubscribe only to re-subscribe.  How come?  Is it because I don’t post frequently enough?

Hopefully I will have better energy tomorrow.  I also find when I am slightly dehydrated that I get a headache in the 90 minute classes.  This headache tends to last as a dull pain the rest of the day.  I have it now as I type.  Don’t be jealous.  Namaste.

Day 52 – Down Belly Down!

Friday, March 26th, 2010
Tree Pose 2/22/10

Tree Pose 2/22/10

It may seem like I am giving my belly a command, but I assure you it is more a cheer!  Today I was in the Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose and noticed that the fold of fat from my belly was much less than a month ago.  So, yeah, down belly down!  In fact, maybe we will just make my belly a masculine gender, so I can say, “Down Boy!”

However, when looking at today’s photo, it looks like my boobs are the ones that are shouting or rather, doing the “down boy down!” thing.  Man, my boobs have never looked like that in yoga class – usually they are more propped up.  Oh well.

So today’s posture is the tree.  I am not a fan of this posture.  It’s a hit or miss if my standing leg starts to fall asleep in this pose.  I think it’s a matter of circulation, so I don’t know what I am doing differently to make it a hit or miss, nonetheless, it happens.

Tree Pose Side View

Tree Pose Side View 2/22/10

Also, from this side view, you can tell that:

  1. My belly is huge
  2. My ass is huge
  3. and the point of this list – that my left knee is not parallel with my right knee.  So,  in other words, it should look like I have one solid leg from the side.

This is one of these Bikram yoga poses that I am not sure I will master by the end of the year.  However, I have really been thinking about health, exercise, etc. ever since Bill and I got  back from Hot Springs Village, AR to visit his grandmother.  There are a lot of people 70+ that live down there and watching them move and try to get around, really makes me want to take care of myself, so that I don’t have a problem going down stairs or getting out of a vehicle.  I believe the flexibility and mobility in my joints that yoga offers will help me.  But that means I have to be a dedicated yoga practicer for years to come.

Since all my grandparents are dead, I am not around people over 60 years old (my parents’ age) that often.  So I will need reminders of this or I will soon take advantage of my body again…as I have in the past.  You gotta plan ahead, my friends.

Okay, enough on my thoughts of the future condition of my body.  I think the instructor today had the hots for the new girl in class as he never EVER helps someone in their poses and he did today.  That was crazy to me.  He always stays in his postures and does the class with you, but today, he moved from his mat to help the new girl and offered way more advice…it was just one of those women intuition things that I noticed.  It was a nice break though because usually I zone out on Fridays because I am not as confident in today’s instructor’s ability to know/understand yoga.  So class seemed to fly by again because I was thinking about love, lust, etc.

Namaste.

Day 51 – The Curse

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 2/22/10

When I first got my period, I remember sitting on my mom’s toilet at the house I grew up in (yup, my mom had a phone in her bathroom) and calling her at my parents’ lake house (she was there for a month) and crying, telling her I got my period.  She replied something along the lines of, “Oh Jen, I’m so sorry I am not there.  You’ve got the curse.”

It’s funny that it’s called the curse.  I’ve bitched about my cramps before on my blog, so you guys all know about my curse and well, it was a curse today in Yoga.  Honestly, I cannot figure out what else it could have been.  But I was weak physically, sick to my stomach, etc.   I decided to stand in certain postures too to save my left knee from further damage.  Not a totally rewarding yoga experience today, folks.

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose 1/8/10

Today’s posture is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose, which I still struggle with because of my pulled hamstring and my lack of balance.  I am bound and determined to perfect this one though, as I did have it down before.  Anyway, in the two photos above, you’ll notice that the first one shows my bad hamstring, because one of my knees is bent.  The other side is better, and I don’t have to bend either knee to get my forehead to my knee.  I will totally have to wear a darker colored shirt for my next photo shoot though, as having to endure the photos of the bologna spots every post is a bit much.

There were 5 people in class today in addition to me.  One of those 5 people was Bill…so really it felt like just 4 more people in class.  Gotta love those early morning classes that no one wants to come to!  There was one guy today that decided to wear his underwear. YES! UNDERWEAR! in class which made for an entertaining distraction.  I would think that if I were a guy I wouldn’t want my willy hanging around like that — seriously, I got interested in watching how a penis moved in the postures.  Ha.

Namaste.

Day 19 – Cramping

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Ah, those of you that are innocent and thinking that my muscles were cramping because of yoga, would definitely be wrong. Nope. Got my period yesterday and ever since I went off of birth control (per recommendation of holistic practitioners that I went to for my Graves’ disease suggested I get off birth control to see if there was any improvement in my hormone levels. Sure enough, not more than a year later, my blood work was back to normal and I was taken off my medication), my cramps have returned.

I am happy to deal with the cramps because they feel better than the years of medication, crazy depression, crazy weight gain, crazy cravings will ever feel. If you are a female, then you know how cramps can be. They can make you have diarrhea, feel like you’re going to have it  or just want to fold over and not address the world. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it through some of the Bikram yoga poses today with that whole thing going on.  It was weird though, class sort of flew by because I think I was really concentrating on my breathing (much like they suggest you do in labor) to avoid the pain going down in my lower gut.

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Today’s photo is the standing separate leg head to knee pose. This pose, ironically, is great for our thyroid. The funny thing is, when I used to tell yoga people that I used to have a thyroid disease, they will ask me if this pose is good for me. It was not when I was being medicated. It is probably a great pose for people that are hypothyroid (aren’t producing enough thyroid hormone), but it wasn’t for me because I was producing too much). Not sure if that makes sense, but now I feel like this pose helps me to repair my thyroid that has been bruised and battered. In this pose, you are supposed to keep your forehead in constant contact with your knee. And in the final advancement of the pose, you are to keep your hands in prayer position in front of your front extended foot with both knees locked out. My legs aren’t steady enough for me to have my hands in prayer in front of my foot, so I am still working on getting there – but the second photo shows how I am almost there. Just to give you an idea.

Tomorrow is the last day before January is over for Yoga2010!  Cool beans.
